Role Purpose

The ultimate purpose of this role is to ensure Sharpak Aylesham Ltd remains compliant with all Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) legal requirements, manage the company Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems and to offer advice to staff on regulatory Health, Safety, Wellbeing and Environmental aspects where necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and ensure legal compliance and implement changes as necessary in line with statutory obligations
  • Monitor and verify effectiveness of policies, procedures, safe systems of work, risk assessments, toolbox talks and training requirements relating to all HSE aspects.
  • Ensure all audit and workplace inspections are performed in line with 14001 and 45001 standards and legal compliance.
  • Monitor and verify corrective actions and mitigating controls for effectiveness.
  • Proactively develop, train, promote and communicate all Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) aspects.
  • Escort and assist 14001 and 45001 auditors / Health & Safety Executive / Environmental Agency when required.
  • Assist Management Teams on near miss / incident and accident investigations, monitor effectiveness and quality of reports; establish root cause and corrective actions and ensure these are fully implemented to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Assist the management teams for all occupational health referrals to ensure effective risk assessments are completed.
  • Identify RIDDOR incidents and notify the Health & Safety Executive / Company Directors where required.
  • Identify and report incidents to Environment Agency / Company Directors where required.
  • Collate and report statistics in line with company KPI and objectives relating to HSE as necessary, including preparation of Board Reports.
  • Advise employees and management teams on Health, Safety and Environmental aspects.
  • Maintain COSHH register and assess substances prior to purchase. Maintain DSE register and carry out assessments where necessary.
  • Deliver Manual ‘Pump Truck’ operator training where necessary.
  • Write and deliver HSE toolbox talks, presentations and inductions; train employees where necessary to manage and improve Health and Safety Standards and Environmental awareness as required.
  • Onboard new starters with appropriate health and safety introductions, site tours and organising necessary training.
  • Act as integrated System Controller (Library Portal) to ensure document control of all documentation relating to Health, Safety and Environmental aspects.
  • Create and manage the company’s annual employee health surveillance strategy, ensuring all HSE requirements and company standards are met. Review and monitor health surveillance and associated OH reports and recommendations to ensure adequate remedial actions are taken to safeguard employee health.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to all compliance‑led training, including certifications, licenses and mandatory training as per the required standards and timescales, liaising with management to ensure full compliance for all employees.
  • Ensure all health, safety and training achievements and certifications are saved to employee files via the HRIS, setting prompts within the system to enable notifications for timely updates and compliance.
  • Collaborate with the HR team to create, develop and execute a proportionate wellbeing strategy in line with HSE requirements and company welfare standards.
  • Collaborate with the HR team and managers in producing risk assessments, enabling OH recommendations as well as supporting reasonable health, safety and wellbeing adjustments for employees throughout the employee lifecycle, including return to work, absence management and maternity.
  • Manage stress & mental health risk controls in line with company strategy.
  • All Health, Safety and Environmental related administration as necessary.
  • Arrange, attend and chair HSE meetings and corrective action meetings as necessary.
  • Prepare HSE 14001 & 45001 Monthly Management Review Reports.
Person Specification

Highly confident in identifying health, safety and wellbeing requirements specific to manufacturing environments, including legislative obligations and best practice standards, and in making informed recommendations to leadership and the board. Skilled at influencing stakeholders at all levels of the business, supported by a NEBOSH General Certificate or Diploma (as a minimum) and extensive experience in a Health, Safety, and Environmental role. Holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Health (or equivalent), CIEH Level 2 Principles of COSHH Training, and is Auditor Trained, with additional qualifications in Train the Trainer.
