Job description
The Role

Reporting to the head of department, you will be responsible for supporting with the management and development of the company’s integrated management system and ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory and ISO requirements. You’ll lead initiatives to strengthen health, safety and quality performance, providing strategic direction and operational leadership to managers, supervisors and employees across all sites in England and Wales.

You will play a key role in implementing the company’s QHS strategy, developing and delivering engaging training, toolbox talks and safety communications, and promoting a positive, accountable safety culture at all levels of the organisation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate Health, Safety and Quality initiatives to ensure company objectives are achieved.
  • Manage and continuously improve the company’s Integrated Management System (IMS) to maintain compliance with ISO 45001:2018, ISO 9001:2015, and BS EN 15713:2009 certifications.
  • Support with the development, communication and implementation of Health & Safety Procedures, Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Risk Assessments (RAs) in consultation with operational teams.
  • Monitor and review contractor compliance and performance.
  • Plan, complete and communicate regular QHS inspections and audits across all business locations.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents, incidents and near misses, including completion of RIDDOR reports where applicable, and ensure root cause analysis and corrective actions are completed.
  • Ensure appropriate PPE, equipment and machinery meet compliance standards and operational needs.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and standards, and ensure these are effectively embedded within the organisation.
  • Prepare and provide input into tenders, bids and PQQs to demonstrate Ward’s HSQ credentials and standards.
  • Lead internal and external audits, manage non-conformities (NCs) and opportunities for improvement (OFIs), and drive the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Educate and influence managers and employees at all levels on their health, safety and quality responsibilities.
  • Act as a key point of contact for regulators, auditors and certification bodies.
  • Deputise for the head of department as required.
About You
  • Proven experience in a Health, Safety and/or Quality management role, ideally within waste, manufacturing, transport, or construction sectors.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the business.
  • Excellent knowledge of H&S legislation, risk management and auditing processes.
  • Practical experience of implementing and managing ISO standards.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (mandatory).

NEBOSH Diploma (or working towards).

Lead Auditor qualification or equivalent.

Experience managing multi-site operations.
