Job summary

A leading food processing organisation in Guildford is looking for an experienced Health, Safety and Environmental Manager. You will oversee compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations while leading initiatives for continuous improvement. Ideal candidates should have a NEBOSH qualification and relevant experience in HSE management within regulated environments. This role also promotes sustainability initiatives across the business.

Qualifications

  • NEBOSH Certificate or Diploma (or equivalent qualification) required.
  • Experience in HSE management role, ideally within manufacturing or food processing.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.

Responsibilities

  • Advise site management on Health, Safety and Environmental matters.
  • Lead safety and environmental meetings, audits, and inspections.

Overview

Vickerstock are working in partnership with a leading food processing organisation on the appointment of a Health, Safety and Environmental Manager.

As the Health, Safety & Environmental Manager, you will take ownership of all site-based Health, Safety and Environmental activities, ensuring legal compliance, maintaining standards, and driving a culture of continuous improvement. Working closely with senior management and operational teams, you will provide guidance, training, and hands-on leadership to maintain a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible operation.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced HSE professional to join a high-performing business and play a key role in promoting a positive safety culture and sustainable environmental performance across the site.

In your new role

Responsibilities
  • Advising site management and employees on all Health, Safety and Environmental matters, ensuring compliance with legislation and company policies
  • Leading safety and environmental meetings, audits, and inspections, ensuring that actions and improvements are implemented effectively
  • Coordinating workplace risk assessments and developing safe systems of work in collaboration with department managers
  • Managing accident, incident, and near-miss investigations, ensuring effective root cause analysis and follow-up
  • Maintaining and improving site HSE management systems, including ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
  • Ensuring statutory records, permits, and fire safety documentation are maintained and up to date
  • Liaising with enforcement authorities, insurers, and auditors, maintaining positive working relationships
  • Preparing and submitting HSE reports, metrics, and performance data to senior management
  • Overseeing waste management processes to ensure compliance and environmental best practice
  • Supporting and promoting sustainability initiatives across the business
What you will need to succeed
  • NEBOSH Certificate or Diploma (or equivalent qualification)
  • Experience in an HSE management role, ideally within manufacturing, food processing, or a similar regulated environment
  • Strong knowledge and experience of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • In-depth understanding of UK Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and best practice
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and influencing skills with the ability to engage teams at all levels
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure and to deadlines
  • IT proficiency (MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Desirable
  • Experience working within the food production or FMCG sector
  • Knowledge of environmental permitting, waste management legislation and sustainability reporting
  • Additional environmental or safety qualifications (e.g. IEMA membership or NEBOSH Environmental Certificate)
