Job summary

Newcastle University Students' Union (NUSU) is seeking a Health & Safety Advisor to lead our risk management strategy on campus. The role focuses on policy development, audits, and incident investigations, with a remit to support student groups and activities.

You will advise senior leaders and work with Newcastle University’s Health and Safety team. A NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent is required, with funded progression to the NEBOSH Diploma and paid study time.

Qualifications

• NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Level 3 health and safety qualification.
• If NEBOSH Diploma not held, complete it as part of the role; funded by NUSU with paid study time.

Responsibilities

• Lead NUSU's health and safety approach and policy development.
• Conduct audits, inspections, and incident investigations; manage fire safety and risk assessments.
• Provide training and reporting; support student sports/outdoor activities with risk assessments and event plans.
• Advise senior leaders and represent NUSU with Newcastle University Health and Safety team.

Job title: Health & Safety Advisor

Location: Newcastle University campus (office based)

Employment type: Full time (37 hours per week)

Salary: £34,147–£38,432 per annum (Grade C), with annual incremental progression. This is a development role with supported progression to Grade D following successful completion of the required NEBOSH Diploma. NUSU will fund the qualification and provide paid study time.

Summary of the role:

This is a fantastic development opportunity for a health and safety professional who is ready to take the next step in their career. You will lead NUSU's approach to health and safety, helping colleagues and student groups manage risk well and meet our legal responsibilities. The role spans policy development, audits and inspections, fire safety, incident investigation, risk assessments, training and reporting. You will also support students involved in higher-risk sports and outdoor pursuits to develop robust risk assessments and event plans.

As part of our Wider Leadership Team, you will advise senior leaders and represent NUSU in partnership with Newcastle University's Health and Safety team. You will need a NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Level 3 health and safety qualification. If you do not already hold the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, you will be required to complete it as part of the role. NUSU will support you with the study costs and paid time off needed to complete the qualification, making this an excellent opportunity to build your expertise and progress your health and safety career.
