Job summary

NRS Dounreay is seeking Health Physics Surveyor Trainees to support the decommissioning programme and develop radiological protection skills. This structured 2-year training includes an NVQ in Radiological Protection and site-specific development activities.

Successful candidates will join Site Services for a two-year training programme, working toward NVQ Radiological Protection and building a portfolio of learning evidence through practical modules and assessments.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 national 5’s at grade C or equivalent, including English, Mathematics and one Science subject.
  • Open, flexible approach to work and prepared to undergo training.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with staff/contractors at all levels.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Required to be designated as a classified worker and 18+ on 1 January 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake radiation and contamination surveying on-site and off-site according to routine monitoring.
  • Change air sample and duct filter papers and count filters to determine activity.
  • Support site operations by monitoring radiological conditions and reporting results.
  • Survey in areas with elevated contamination while wearing PPE/RPE.
  • Review and support the production of health physics documentation.
  • Assist with familiarisation and training of health physics staff.
  • Participate in emergency on-call arrangements.
  • Perform responsibilities of local/management appointments relevant to post.

Job description

NRS Dounreay are looking for a number of Health Physics Surveyor Trainees. As a Health Physics Surveyor Trainee, you will support Dounreay's decommissioning programme while developing skills in radiological protection and workplace safety. Through a structured 2-year training programme, including an NVQ in Radiological Protection, you will gain the knowledge and practical experience needed for a career in the nuclear industry.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Site Services for Trainee Health Physics Surveyors to support the ongoing decommissioning programme at Dounreay.

Successful candidates will join a structured two-year training programme, designed to develop the skills, knowledge and practical experience required for a career in radiological protection. The programme includes working towards an NVQ in Radiological Protection, alongside a range of site-specific training and development activities.

Throughout the programme, trainees will receive ongoing support, with progress regularly monitored and assessed against Dounreay standards. You will build a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your learning and competence, supported by accredited certificates achieved through the completion of training modules.

Please note that anticipated start dates for this role will be March 2027.

Main responsibilities
  • Undertake radiation and contamination surveying both on the Dounreay site and offsite in accordance with the defined routine monitoring programme
  • Undertake the changing of air sample and duct sample filter papers, and undertake counting of the filters to determine the activity present
  • Support site operations as they progress by monitoring the radiological conditions and reporting the results
  • Undertake surveying operations in areas with enhanced levels of radioactive contamination wearing appropriate PPE/RPE
  • Review and support the production of health physics documentation
  • Assist with the familiarisation and training of health physics staff
  • Be required to participate in emergency on-call arrangements
  • Perform the responsibilities of local/management appointments relevant to post
Aptitudes and experience
  • Minimum of 3 national 5’s at grade C or equivalent, including English, Mathematics and one Science subject
  • Open, flexible approach to work and prepared to undergo training
  • The ability to communicate effectively with staff/contractors at all levels
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Required to be designated as a classified worker and as such must be 18 years old or over on or before 1st January 2027 in accordance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017
  • Post specific physical capability analysis assessment

The successful candidates will be required to undergo security clearance checks.
