Job summary

Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a Health Informatics Specialist / data Scientist (Band 7) on a fixed-term 12‑month basis. The role supports an NHS England‑funded Rheumatology innovation project, using advanced analytics, machine learning and PROM data to transform services across Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science or related field.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Data Science, AI, Health Informatics or related subject.
  • Experience applying statistical analysis and/or ML to real-world datasets.
  • Experience with NHS data and information governance.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the data science and analytical activity for an innovative Rheumatology project.
  • Developing and applying statistical and ML models using clinical and PROM data.
  • Managing, analysing and interpreting complex healthcare datasets with governance.

Main duties of the job
  • Leading the data science and analytical activity for an innovative Rheumatology project.
  • Developing and applying statistical and machine learning models using clinical and patient-reported outcome (PROMs) data.
  • Managing, analysing and interpreting complex healthcare datasets while maintaining high standards of data quality and information governance.
  • Working collaboratively with clinicians, researchers, digital teams and IT colleagues to deliver data-driven solutions.
  • Producing reports, dashboards and visualisations that support decision-making and service improvement.
  • Providing specialist advice on analytics, artificial intelligence and data science methodologies.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working with complex datasets, strong skills in data analysis and programming, an ability to communicate complex information clearly to non-technical audiences, and a collaborative approach to working with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications and Training
  • Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Health Informatics or a related subject.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience applying statistical analysis and/or machine learning techniques to real-world datasets.
  • Experience working with large, complex datasets and producing analytical outputs to support decision-making.
  • Experience of working with NHS data and a sound understanding of information governance, data protection and cyber security requirements.
  • Experience presenting analytical findings and recommendations to a variety of audiences, including senior stakeholders.
  • Experience leading or contributing significantly to data science or analytics projects.
  • Experience of working with healthcare, clinical or patient-reported outcome (PROMs) datasets.
  • Experience of working within NHS, academic or research environments.
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in one or more analytical programming languages, such as Python, R or SPSS.
  • Ability to manage, cleanse, manipulate and interpret complex datasets.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and data science frameworks.
  • Proficiency in SQL and an understanding of relational databases.
  • Ability to design, undertake and interpret advanced analytical work.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience producing reports, dashboards, visualisations and presentations to support decision-making.
  • Strong stakeholder management, influencing and communication skills.
  • Experience of developing dashboards or deploying analytical models into operational use.
