Job description
Role Overview

We are looking for a Health & Wellbeing Advisor to primarily support families living in the boroughs of Guildford, Waverley, Epsom & Ewell and Mole Valley. Like all roles at Active Surrey, you can expect this to be fun, rewarding and challenging. No two days will be the same! Your role will be to deliver the one‑to‑one session part of the ‘Be Your Best’ programme, either in schools or family homes. Families are also offered online group sessions delivered by the University of Surrey and Family Learning. Topics include the Eatwell Guide, sugar swaps, sleep, exercise and screen time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver one‑to‑one sessions as part of the ‘Be Your Best’ programme, in schools or family homes.
  • Support families through online group sessions covering nutrition, activity, sleep and screen time.
  • Collaborate with the University of Surrey, SCC Family Learning and Active Surrey partners.
  • Advocate current health and wellbeing messages, particularly around nutrition and physical activity.
  • Provide onward referral and sign‑posting to local services for families in Guildford, Waverley, Epsom & Ewell and Mole Valley.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • You're passionate about making a difference and helping those who need it most.
  • You're patient, empathetic, non‑judgmental and able to really listen.
  • You work well independently and also collaboratively as part of a wider team.
  • You're organised and able to proactively manage your schedule to maximise contact time with families.
Shortlisting Criteria
  • Experience of providing health and wellbeing interventions to families with children aged 5‑17 years, with the ability to recognise and respond appropriately in sometimes challenging situations.
  • A good knowledge of current health and wellbeing messages and ability to advocate this (particularly nutrition and physical activity to help reach and maintain a healthy weight).
  • Experience of working with young people with additional needs, in particular Autism and ADHD.
  • Local knowledge of onward referral / signposting options for families living in the area.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent IT skills with experience of working with internal monitoring systems (we use Upshot).
Application Process

To apply, submit a CV and answer the following four questions:

  1. What three qualities do you have that would make you a good Health & Wellbeing Advisor and how do these qualities support Surrey County Council’s culture of collaboration, inclusivity and adaptability?
  2. Please tell us about your experience in working with children / young people and families to support behaviour change, in relation to healthy living.
  3. Please share your experience of working with children with additional needs.
  4. We work in an environment where we are encouraged to try new things and be curious to help us meet our goals. Please provide examples of where you have developed an idea that has helped you achieve an outcome or a goal.

A valid driving licence, access to a vehicle and willingness to travel across a wide geographical area are required. Reasonable adjustments will be made for successful applicants who have a disability or long‑term health condition.

Contract & Working Hours

This part‑time role has a starting salary of 26,841 per annum (pro rata from 33,552 FTE) based on a 28.8‑hour working week. It is a fixed‑term contract until 31 March 2027. Working days are Monday‑Thursday, 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, with flexibility. The contractual location is Victoria Gate, central Woking, and occasional attendance in the office will be required (minimum once every three weeks). The role will predominantly involve visiting families in their home or at school around the Guildford & Waverley and Surrey Downs areas, with occasional Surrey‑wide travel.

Benefits
  • 26 days holiday, rising to 28 days after 2 years’ service and 31 days after 5 years’ service, pro‑rata for part‑time staff.
  • Option to buy up to 10 days of additional annual leave.
  • A generous local government salary related pension.
  • Up to 5 days of carer’s leave and 2 paid volunteering days per year.
  • Paternity, adoption and dependents leave.
  • An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to support health and wellbeing.
  • Learning and development hub where you can access a wealth of resources.
  • Wellbeing and lifestyle discounts including gym, travel and shopping.
  • A chance to make a real difference to the lives of our residents.
About Active Surrey

Active Surrey is one of 43 national Active Partnerships funded by Sport England to tackle inactivity driven by inequalities. We believe in the power of physical activity and the benefits it can offer as a mood booster, confidence lifter, social enhancer and a life extender. Less than half of Surrey’s children and young people are doing enough physical activity every week. ‘Be Your Best’ is a fully funded healthy lifestyle programme for families with children aged 5‑17 years, who are above the healthy weight range. The programme adopts a family approach so you will be working with the whole family.

Local Government Reorganisation

Surrey County Council is undergoing local government reorganisation, moving from a two‑tier system to new unitary councils in April 2027. If you are employed by Surrey on 1st April 2027, your role will transfer with current terms and conditions to one of these new councils, supporting local devolution and greater powers for our communities.
