The role

SSE Thermal have an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Officer to take a leading role in managing the safety, health, and environmental compliance across our peaking plant generating stations in Rode and Tawnaghmore, with Platin also coming into scope in due course. This position will be pivotal in ensuring the safe operation of both active and under-construction facilities, while supporting regulatory obligations and internal standards.

As an integral part of the Management Team, you’ll also ensure compliance with legislation and company SHE (Safety, Health & Environmental) requirements.

Some of your main accountabilities will include;
  • Leading compliance with all health and safety legislative requirements across multiple power generation sites.
  • Managing and implementing SSE’s SHE Management System, ensuring consistent application and improvement.
  • Overseeing and reporting on statutory compliance, liaising with regulatory bodies such as the HSA and supporting COMAH/SEVESO requirements.
  • Conducting and leading audits, risk assessments, and safety investigations, ensuring robust follow-up and documentation.
  • Supporting the Environmental Co-ordinator and contributing to emergency response planning, contractor compliance, training needs, and safety performance reporting.
To be successful in this role, we would love you to have;
  • A recognised qualification in Health & Safety Management or a related discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience in a similar role.
  • Previous experience in a senior Health & Safety position, preferably in industrial or high-risk sectors. A good understanding of power generation operations and maintenance is an advantage but not essential.
  • Strong knowledge of Irish Health & Safety legislation, with auditing qualifications is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to make complex safety standards clear and accessible to diverse teams.
  • A methodical and analytical mindset with strong organisational, planning, and IT skills.
