Job Responsibilities
- Defining clear principles of health and safety for Saga, to drive a culture of proactive health and safety management, promoting a safe workplace environment, for office, remote and field colleagues
- Evaluating current practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk
- Development of action plans to mitigate risks
- Developing and implementing health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with HS legislation, regulations and standards
- Supporting and overseeing the implementation of recommended action plans
- Creating a communication strategy that promotes awareness of health and safety matters and accident prevention to non‑safety professionals
- Building team capability to be able to investigate near misses, accidents or incidents to discover root causes; recommend mitigation actions, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
- Providing advice, guidance, and support on all aspects of health and safety
- Advising on the development of risk assessments and risk control measures
- Providing regular reporting on safety performance and incidents, presenting findings to key stakeholders, including to the Board
- Supporting in the development and delivery of training and education programmes to enhance the awareness and ensure competence of directors, managers, colleagues, contractors etc.
- Identifying trends of health and safety inquiries within the organisation, adopting a proactive stance in resolving issues and concerns.
- Collaboration and consultation across the business to continually improve the occupational physical and mental health of colleagues, implementing preventative and reactive controls where appropriate.
- Support key programmes and projects in relation to HS, adding value, continuously improving standards, and adequately controlling risk, while focussing on business need to find optimum and pragmatic solutions.
- Providing an independent and competent HS capability for Saga to ensure that all key partners meet good practice and legal requirements as part of good corporate governance.
- Working with internal and external stakeholders to monitor the status of compliance, identifying risks and issues.
- Representing Saga, as and when required, at selected meetings involving key stakeholders.
- Advising in the management and response to health and safety breaches, incidents, and emergencies.
- Keeping up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all Health & Safety Executive (HSE) standards and compliance obligations that affect the workplace
- Developing and supporting reporting in alignment with our mandatory and voluntary compliance obligations.
- Following our Business Code of Conduct and always acting with integrity and due diligence.
Qualifications and Experience
- Chartered Member of IOSH (preferred)
- NEBOSH Occupational Safety & Health Diploma
- Experience in HSE management and in-depth understanding of UK H&S legislation and a pragmatic risk‑based approach to advising and applying this.
- Experience in the development and implementation of a Health and Safety Management system (preferred)
- Solid understanding of safety culture
- Proactive approach, prioritising preventing accidents and incidents before they occur
- Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and industry standards.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective safety management systems and undertake risk assessments.
- Experience of conducting safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards
- Able to undertake incident investigations, including root cause analysis.
- Detail oriented, ensuring no potential hazards are overlooked
- Ability to balance attention to detail while understanding broader context and perspective.
- Able to deliver safety and awareness training.
- Prioritise workload, ability to manage priorities and conflicting demands.
- Strong communicator and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Proactive and results‑driven mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement.
