We are currently looking for a Health and Safety Advisor to join our Health & Safety and Quality Assurance Function within the Science, Research and innovation Group. This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based South Mimms, Hertfordshire. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites. We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 12 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.

It is divided into 6 sub‑Groups, Innovation Accelerator, Clinical Investigations and Trials, Research and Development, Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing and Quality Assurance and Health & Safety., The role will assist in promoting a positive health and safety culture for all our staff, leading by example and setting the standard. Your support and guidance to managers and staff, elevating their knowledge and engagement with all aspects of health and safety will help create a proactive, forward‑thinking, and most importantly, safe work environment.

Leadership and management

The H&S Advisor role sits within the Health and Safety Team led by the Lead Health and Safety Advisor and is part of the Health & Safety and Quality Assurance function in the Science, Research and Innovation Group.

Service delivery
  • Provide support, advice and information to all staff and management on all matters relating to health and safety, risk management and legal compliance.
  • Develop and deliver training for H&S inductions, DSE, manual handling, risk assessment, laboratory safety along with any other identified training needs.
  • Provide support for staff using H&S software systems.
  • Investigate and respond to health and safety related accidents and incidents as required.
  • Manage a portfolio of work covering multiple health and safety areas and projects, with the flexibility to be able to deal with health and safety issues as they arise.
  • Support with all types of health and safety risk assessments and policies across the Agency to maintain legal compliance and best practice ensuring a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Provide health and safety support to necessary stakeholders in the planning and implementation stages of refurbishment and project work as required.
Quality and Assurance
  • Audit and inspection – work with relevant stakeholders to carry out health and safety audits and inspections in line with Agency arrangements.

Technical Criteria
  • NEBOSH Certificate and/or NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent (A)
  • Experience in communicating technical Health and Safety information to staff at all levels and managing risk proportionately to help create a safe, efficient and positive working environment (A, I, P)

Salary and Benefits

Alongside your salary of £46,160, Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency contributes £13,372 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.

  • Annual Leave: 25 days annual leave on entry, rising by one day for each completed year of service to a maximum of 30 days and pro‑rata for part‑time staff. PLUS 8 bank holidays

  • Hours of Work: 37 hours (net) per week for full time staff in all geographical locations, including London and pro‑rata for part‑time staff
