Hastings Direct is seeking a Head of Technical Pricing to lead an experienced team of Data Scientists and Actuaries. You will set the pricing strategy, drive live pricing models, profitability models and feeder systems, and partner with Underwriting to improve risk prediction and fair customer outcomes.

You will build capability, promote innovation with responsible governance, and report to senior leadership while shaping the future of technical pricing in the business.

Qualifications

• Senior leader with experience in technical pricing, predictive modelling, actuarial science, or data science.
• Experience applying predictive models in commercial settings with strong statistics knowledge.
• Experience overseeing teams and using Python; familiarity with generative AI techniques.
• Ability to balance innovation with governance and model risk.

Head of Technical Pricing

The role As Head of Technical Pricing, you’ll lead an experienced function of Data Scientists and Actuaries responsible for the models that underpin our pricing decisions. Your remit will span models deployed into live pricing, offline profitability models and the feeder models that support them. You’ll set and deliver a clear technical pricing strategy, promoting innovation and the responsible adoption of emerging techniques and technologies. Your goal will be to advance our modelling capability, improve the quality and speed of decision-making and position Hastings at the forefront of the industry.

• Attract, develop, motivate and retain a high-performing team of Data Scientists and Actuaries, including leaders of teams
• Lead the design and delivery of robust models for live pricing, profitability assessment and the supporting technical pricing ecosystem
• Partner across Underwriting and the wider business to improve risk prediction, reduce cross-subsidisation and support fair customer outcomes
• Build and maintain strong relationships with Claims and Account Management so operational change, emerging experience and portfolio insight are reflected in forward-looking models

What we’re looking for

• A proven senior leader in technical pricing, predictive modelling, actuarial science, data science or a closely related discipline, ideally within general insurance or another complex, highly regulated sector
• Extensive experience developing and applying predictive models in commercial settings, with a strong command of probability, statistics and numerical analysis
• Strong knowledge of actuarial practice, including the calibration of models to ultimate claims experience
• Experience leading managers and specialist teams, with a track record of building capability, setting direction and delivering through others
• Experience overseeing work delivered using Python and an informed appreciation of emerging generative AI techniques
• A pragmatic, outcome-focused approach, with the judgement to balance innovation, pace, governance and model risk
