Job description
Head of Health & Safety

Are you a Health & Safety professional with strong leadership skills and a passion for shaping a positive safety culture across a complex, high-risk environment?

Would you like to join one of the UK’s most iconic and dynamic operational environments — where engineering, logistics, construction, and maritime activities all come together at scale?

Do you have experience influencing at senior levels and driving cultural change across a diverse workforce?

If so, this could be the opportunity for you…

An exciting position has arisen for a Head of Health & Safety to join one of the busiest ports and a critical gateway for trade, tourism and logistics. As part of their forward-thinking leadership team, you will play a key role in transforming how Health & Safety is embedded across all areas of the business from engineering and cargo operations to cruise, and construction projects.

Why the Head of Health & Safety position is something you should apply for:
  • You’ll lead the development and implementation of a proactive, people-focused safety culture, one where Health & Safety is truly seen as everyone’s responsibility.
  • You’ll work across one of the widest and most diverse risk profiles in the UK, including engineering, maritime, infrastructure, logistics, and operations.
  • The Port is entering an exciting period of transformation, with a strong leadership commitment to evolving culture, structure, and safety performance.
  • You’ll have the chance to make a genuine, long-term impact through upcoming strategic initiatives such as safety culture programmes, behavioural workshops, and a comprehensive safety improvement roadmap.
The successful Head of Health & Safety will:
  • Have a proven track record leading Health & Safety across complex, multi-risk environments such as infrastructure, transport, logistics, engineering, maritime, or manufacturing.
  • Ideally hold a Level 6 qualification or NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and influencing skills — able to engage at all levels, from board to front line.
  • Have experience developing and delivering safety culture and behavioural change programmes.
  • Be comfortable operating autonomously, setting strategic direction, and supporting a growing Health & Safety team.
  • Be based onsite at the Port, particularly during the initial period, moving to a hybrid model over time. Some weekend work may be required as needed.
In return, the successful individual will receive an attractive compensation package consisting of:
  • Bonus
  • Pension: up to 10% employer contribution
  • Private healthcare
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays
  • Additional benefits including: birthday leave, volunteering day, EV scheme, cycle-to-work scheme, free parking, and annual salary review
