Mention Me is seeking a Head of Engineering in London to lead a team of 8-10 frontend and backend engineers. This hands-on role requires spending roughly half the time coding and half time leading and growing the team.

You’ll set technical direction, drive AI-native practices, and collaborate with data and product leadership to raise quality and drive customer value. Hybrid work is offered in a fast-moving scale-up environment.

Role Overview

As our Head of Engineering, you’ll lead around 8-10 frontend and backend engineers and report to our CPO. This is a hands-on role. We expect you to spend roughly half your time in the code and half leading and growing the team. We’ve just modernised our frontend, and now we want to build on it and deliver much more for our customers.

You’ll set our technical direction and put clear, simple processes in place so the team can focus on what matters most. You’ll also be the voice of engineering in our leadership team, helping product and the wider business understand the trade-offs behind big technical decisions. We already work in an AI-native way, and you’ll make sure it raises quality, not just speed. You’ll also work closely with our data team.

Key Responsibilities

• Own delivery for an agile team of frontend and backend engineers working in small, outcome-owning squads.
• Set technical direction and effective processes across the stack: next.js/TypeScript frontend app hosted on Vercel (migrating off a legacy frontend) and PHP/Symfony backend/ logic layer on AWS (ECS, RDS MySQL).
• Drive our AI-native way of working (e.g. AI code review on every PR, AI coding agents handling small fixes, Claude as the default assistant) and set the bar so AI-accelerated output raises quality, not just speed.
• Build real fluency in our data infrastructure (BigQuery, dbt) to keep engineering and data decisions aligned.
• Be the visible, accountable point of technical leadership, represent engineering in company strategy and translate trade-offs for product and leadership.
• Own career development, progression and hiring for the team.
• Proven leadership of product engineering team at a B2B SaaS company, ideally martech or adjacent.
• Strong range across frontend (React/TypeScript) and backend (PHP/Symfony or a comparable server-side stack, AWS), able to credibly review and guide both.
• Own, maintain and develop our core infrastructure (AWS - ECS, VPC, SQS, Aurora - and GCP - pubsup, cloudrun, bigquery), and Vercel connection
• Data infrastructure fluency (pipelines, warehousing) to partner effectively with data engineering/science.
• Demonstrated AI-native practice: has built a culture around AI-assisted coding and AI-augmented review, with clear judgement on where it helps and where it needs guardrails.
• A genuine player-coach track record: still hands-on technically while growing, hiring, and holding a team accountable.
• Comfortable in a turnaround/scale-up environment: pragmatic, decisive, good at building trust and momentum, team player both the engineering team as well as cross-functionally.
• Belief in product engineering: full-stack ownership of outcomes and customer impact.
