Job description

Vulcain Engineering, an international engineering consultancy, supports global industrial leaders in their transition to a more responsible and sustainable future. We support our customers in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of their complex infrastructure projects that will shape the world of tomorrow. With operations in 17 countries and employing over 6,000 staff worldwide, our business responds to the needs of our clients by delivering high-value engineering expertise tailored to our clients’ most complex challenges.

In the UK, we have a key focus in the Nuclear sector, contributing to ground breaking projects, such as Hinkley Point C (HPC).

The Position: Hazards Safety Engineer

We are seeking a motivated Hazards Safety Engineer to support the delivery of complex nuclear and highly regulated infrastructure projects. This role is responsible for ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities through the identification, assessment, and management of hazards such as fire, flooding, explosions, seismic events, and extreme weather.

The role involves producing hazard assessments, supporting HAZID and HAZOP studies, contributing to nuclear safety case documentation, and working with multidisciplinary teams to embed safety requirements into design solutions. Candidates should have experience in hazard or nuclear safety engineering, strong knowledge of hazard management processes, and a relevant engineering or scientific degree.

  • Produce and maintain hazard assessments for nuclear facilities, systems and buildings, demonstrating robustness against internal and external hazards.
  • Identify, assess and manage hazards including flooding, fire, explosion, seismic events, dropped loads, extreme weather and other plant risks.
  • Support hazard identification and risk assessment activities including HAZID, HAZOP, hazard reviews and hazard verification studies.
  • Develop safety justifications and contribute to nuclear safety case documentation throughout concept, detailed design, construction and commissioning phases.
  • Work closely with system, layout, process, mechanical and civil engineering teams to ensure hazard protection requirements are incorporated into design solutions.
  • Assess engineering changes and design modifications, ensuring impacts on hazards, safety functions and nuclear safety requirements are appropriately managed.
  • Define, track and verify hazard mitigation measures, ensuring safety-classified equipment and systems meet protection requirements.
  • Interface with stakeholders, clients and multidisciplinary design teams, presenting technical findings and supporting regulatory and design authority reviews.
Preferred Profile:

Alongside a commitment to our values of Care & Compassion, Performance, Team Spirit, and Inclusiveness, we are looking for individuals who can bring the following:

  • Experience as a Hazards Engineer, Hazard Studies Engineer, Nuclear Safety Engineer, Safety Case Engineer or similar role within the nuclear sector.
  • Knowledge of internal and external hazards including flooding, fire, explosion, seismic, environmental and impact hazards.
  • Experience authoring hazard assessments, hazard studies, safety reports or safety case documentation.
  • Practical experience facilitating or participating in HAZID, HAZOP, hazard review and ALARP activities.
  • Experience supporting design development and engineering change processes on complex, highly regulated projects.
  • Familiarity with UK nuclear projects such as EPR, EPR2, Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C, EDF, Edvance, Rolls-Royce SMR, Defence Nuclear or major licensed sites.
  • Understanding of nuclear safety principles, hazard management processes and the application of safety functional requirements.
  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical, Chemical, Process, Physics, Nuclear or a related Engineering discipline.

Please note that visa sponsorship is not guaranteed and is assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on role criticality and project needs. Many of our UK projects require high-level security clearance, meaning we can often only consider candidates with an existing, indefinite right to work in the UK. Exceptionally, we may consider visa sponsorship for applicants with niche experience aligned to our core work (e.g. EPR/nuclear new build).

We offer a competitive salary tailored to your experience and background. Whether you're earlier in your career or bring more senior-level expertise, we encourage you to apply if this role aligns with your skills, or if you're open to discussing other opportunities within this discipline.

We also offer a benefits package, both standard and enhanced, which is designed to support your wellbeing, development, and financial future, including:

  • 25 Days Annual Leave + Bank Holidays, with the ability to swap bank holidays for cultural or religious celebrations
  • Enhanced Maternity, Paternity, Adoption and Neonatal Care Leave
  • Employee Referral Scheme
  • Private Medical & Dental Insurance
  • Electric Vehicle Scheme
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Training & Development, including additional qualifications and accreditations relevant to your role
  • Travel Insurance – for both business and personal travel
  • Employee Assistance Programme
