Job summary

Amentum is seeking an EC&I Hardware Designer to deliver complex control and automation hardware for nuclear-related projects. You will design enclosures, panels and interface systems within a multidisciplinary team, from concept through manufacture and installation.

Key tasks include creating AutoCAD drawings, assembling I/O schedules, and performing cable routing, power and heat calculations to meet safety-critical requirements. Hybrid working and career growth are emphasized.

• Strong wiring/layout skills and system integration understanding.

We are currently looking for a Hardware Design Engineer to join the team based in Birchwood Park, Warrington or Moor Row, Cumbria.

About the Role

We’re looking for an EC&I Hardware Designer to support the delivery of complex control and automation systems within the nuclear sector.

This role focuses on the design and development of control system hardware, including enclosures, panels, and interface systems. You’ll work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, contributing to high-quality, safety-critical projects from concept through to manufacture and installation.

What You’ll Be Doing

Design and develop electrical enclosures, control panels, and interface systems

Produce detailed AutoCAD drawings and design packages

Develop and manage:

• General Assemblies

• I/O schedules

• Cable calculations and routing

• Power load and heat calculations

Support design reviews, site visits, and engineering assessments

Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are delivered to a high standard

Produce supporting documentation including test specifications, installation method Statements, inspection reports, testing of manufactured equipment to associated drawings and quality records

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

Strong experience using AutoCAD for electrical design
Experience delivering EC&I hardware design within engineering projects
Experience designing control panels, MCCs, or electrical enclosures
Knowledge of IET Wiring Regulations and CDM Regulations
Understanding of cable routing, panel layouts, and system integration
Strong communication skills and ability to work within a project team

Desirable:

Experience with PLC / HMI / SCADA systems

Experience in regulated industries (e.g. nuclear, defence, pharma)

Familiarity with functional safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508)

AutoCAD proficient

Design new and retrofit control panels, Motor Control Centres, Power distributions, Data Racks, HMI panels and machine interfaces (pushbuttons, lamps, switches)

Generate panel designs – internal/external GA’s, I/O Wiring, LV power distribution – for manufacture

Can undertake design activities such as:

• Cable calcs / sizing

• Fuse sizing

• Load calcs

• Power/Heat Calcs

• Component selection / arrangement

• Familiar with segregation (power/control)

• I/O interfacing / marshalling

Familiar/Certified BS 7671 Wiring Regs

Carry out site inspections and surveys

SL experience / nuclear industry experience desirable

Sub-contractor manufacturing oversight

Installation instructions / Method Statements

Risk Assessments

Degree/HNC (or equivalent experience) in Electrical / EC&I Engineering
