Job summary

Government Facility Services Ltd is seeking a practical Handyperson / Maintenance Operative to work at HMP The Verne, Portland. The role focuses on maintaining and repairing building fabric within a custodial environment to support safe, secure operations.

You will work Monday to Friday, 39 hours per week, with tasks including use of hand and power tools, ensuring health and safety standards, and coordinating with a skilled team of tradespeople.

Qualifications

• Experience in maintaining/building fabric in a custodial or similar setting is desirable.
• Proficiency with hand and power tools for repair and maintenance tasks.
• Up-to-date First Aid at Work qualification and health & safety knowledge are required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair building fabric within a prison environment to ensure safe operations.
• Coordinate with trades and facilities staff to complete tasks efficiently.

Location: HMP The Verne, Verne Common Rd, Portland, DT5 1EQ

Salary: £27,505.80 per annum

Contract: Permanent, 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday

We are seeking a practical and confident Handyperson / Maintenance Operative to join our team at HMP The Verne, a Category C Male prison as an Escort / Fabric Operative.

HMP The Verne runs like a self-contained town, it takes hundreds of people to keep it functioning, and as the Facilities Maintenance Team we are committed and driving the smooth and safe operation, like a heart that pumps blood through the body, everything we do impacts every prisoner, employee, and visitor, and wider to the families and community.

As an Escort / Fabric Operative, you will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced and passionate colleagues who vary from Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Painters, to Cleaners, and Administrators, and others, who are all dedicated to making a positive difference, providing a safe and secure environment for all.

We are a Ministry of Justice business and provide critical and time-bound services to HMPPS, and are looking for an experienced Handyperson to join us as an Escort / Fabric Operative with a combination of:

• Experience of prison environment (Desirable)
• Experience of use of hand and power tools
• Previous experience of working within a building fabric / Hard FM environment
• Up to date First Aid at Work Qualification
• Level 2 qualification in English and Maths
• Good Health & Safety knowledge
• Excellent organisational, time management and people skills

Future Plans.

GFSL has been notified by it's shareholder (MOJ) that the provision of FM Services will in future be delivered by the private sector. This means that following a successful procurement process, GFSL's services will complete transfer to a private sector provider/providers no sooner than August 2027.
