Job description

Are you an accomplished finance leader with the technical expertise and strategic judgement to safeguard the financial integrity of a complex organisation? Can you build high-performing teams, strengthen financial control and ensure that finance is ready to support ambitious plans for the future?

We are looking for a Group Financial Controller to lead the financial control environment across Bettys & Taylors Group.

This is a broad and influential leadership position with responsibility for the Group’s accounting, tax, treasury and transactional finance teams. You will be the guardian of our financial integrity and liquidity, ensuring that we have accurate financial information, robust governance and the financial capability needed to support our day-to-day operations and long-term growth plans.

As a member of the Group Finance Leadership Team, you will help shape the future direction of finance across the Group. You will combine technical excellence with commercial awareness, strong leadership and an outward-looking perspective to ensure that our financial control environment continues to evolve alongside the business’ needs and requirements.

The role

Reporting to the Group Finance Director, you will lead the Group’s accounting, tax and treasury, and transactional finance teams.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and developing the accounting, tax, treasury and transactional finance teams, creating a culture of accountability, curiosity and continuous improvement.
  • Maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the Group’s financial and management accounting, including its monthly results and annual statutory accounts.
  • Ensuring compliance with UK GAAP and all relevant accounting standards.
  • Continuously improving an effective financial control and governance framework, supported by appropriate policies, controls and monitoring processes.
  • Leading the Group’s tax compliance, including Corporation Tax, VAT, Duty and other statutory obligations.
  • Working with the Group Finance Director to ensure that all Senior Accounting Officer requirements are met and that systems and controls comply with HMRC expectations.
  • Leading the statutory audit process and building a strong, effective relationship with the Group’s external auditors.
  • Overseeing the preparation of statutory accounts and other external financial reporting requirements.
  • Managing the Group’s bank accounts, treasury requirements and payment processes.
  • Optimising the Group’s liquidity through effective cash-flow management, working capital performance and banking relationships.
  • Leading the Group’s foreign-exchange hedging strategy for its significant US dollar exposure, ensuring that currency risk is managed effectively and in line with treasury policy.
  • Advising the Group Finance Director and senior leadership on financial risks and opportunities associated with the Group’s strategies, business plans and key decisions.
  • Monitoring emerging financial legislation, regulation and market developments, and translating these into practical actions for the Group.
  • Defining clear measures of success for the financial control environment and using performance insight to track progress and course-correct when required.
  • Contributing collectively to the Group Finance Leadership Team, helping to lead and embed Group-wide finance strategy, change initiatives and effective ways of working.
About you

You will be an experienced and credible finance leader who combines deep technical expertise with strong commercial judgement, strategic awareness and the ability to build trusted relationships.

You will bring:

  • An appropriate professional accountancy qualification, such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CPA, or equivalent demonstrable finance expertise.
  • Significant experience of leading multiple teams across financial and management accounting, tax, treasury and transactional finance, ideally within an FMCG, retail or multisite environment.
  • Substantial experience of treasury, liquidity and cash management, including cash-flow forecasting and banking relationship management.
  • Experience of leading tax compliance across areas such as Corporation Tax and VAT within a large or complex organisation.
  • Significant experience of foreign-exchange risk management and hedging, ideally involving exposure of more than USD 100 million.
  • Knowledge of relevant hedging instruments, hedge accounting, counterparty risk and foreign-exchange policy frameworks.
  • A strong track record of building proactive relationships with banks, auditors, tax specialists and other professional advisers.
  • High ethical standards, sound judgement and a strong commitment to compliance and responsible financial stewardship.

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours over five days and based at our Plumpton Park site in Harrogate.
