Job summary

Rutherford Cross is assisting an established client in Scotland seeking a Group Financial Controller. This senior finance leadership role is responsible for financial control across the Group, including statutory reporting, audit, consolidations, tax compliance, and treasury management.

You will mentor the Finance Manager and wider finance team. The role reports to the CFO and supports budgeting, forecasting, due diligence, and post-acquisition integration, driving performance and control

Qualifications

  • Qualified accountant with ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent.
  • Experience in financial reporting, audit management, statutory accounts, and group consolidations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead financial accounting and reporting across the Group, ensuring accurate, timely information.
  • Own month-end close, reconciliations, journals, accruals, and management reporting.
  • Oversee statutory accounts, group consolidations, and UK accounting standards compliance (FRS 102).
  • Manage external audits, and relations with auditors, banks, insurers, and tax advisers.
  • Ensure VAT, CIS, corporation tax, payroll, and regulatory reporting requirements.

Job description

Our client an established and rapidly growing organization, specialising in infrastructure and energy solutions and delivering innovative projects that support the transition to sustainable, low-carbon networks.With extensive experience and a strong track record of successful project delivery, the business has become a recognised leader within the sector. To strengthen their existing finance team they have a newly created opportunity for an experienced Group Financial Controller.The Group Financial Controller is a senior finance leadership role responsible for maintaining a robust financial control environment across the Group. Reporting to the CFO, the role owns the accuracy, integrity and timeliness of financial accounting, statutory reporting, audit delivery, consolidations, tax compliance, treasury management and covenant reporting. The role also supports the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, acquisition due diligence, integration activity and balance sheet governance, while leading and developing the Finance Manager, Project Accountant and wider finance team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead financial accounting and reporting across the Group, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial information.
  • Own the month-end close process, including reconciliations, journals, accruals, prepayments, and management reporting.
  • Oversee statutory accounts preparation, group consolidations, and compliance with accounting standards, including FRS 102 updates.
  • Manage external audits and relationships with auditors, banks, insurers, tax advisers, and other professional partners.
  • Ensure compliance with VAT, CIS, corporation tax, payroll, and other regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Lead treasury and cash management activities, including forecasting, liquidity monitoring, and covenant reporting.
  • Support acquisitions, due diligence, and post-acquisition integration activities.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor the finance team, driving high performance and accountability.
  • Drive continuous improvement through systems enhancement, automation, and AI-enabled efficiencies.
  • Partner with the CFO and senior leadership team to support budgeting, forecasting, strategic decision-making, and business performance reporting.

  • Strong technical accounting, statutory reporting, audit, and consolidation expertise.
  • Excellent financial control, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commercially minded, with the ability to translate financial data into actionable business insight.
  • Proven people leadership and team development experience.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including experience working with senior leaders and external advisers.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for continuous improvement, process optimisation, and leveraging technology to enhance finance operations.
Qualifications & Competencies
  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
  • Extensive experience in financial reporting, audit management, statutory accounts, and group consolidations.
  • Strong understanding of FRS 102 and UK tax compliance requirements.
  • Experience within a multi-entity, project-based environment, ideally infrastructure, construction, engineering, energy, or related sectors.
  • Proven track record of leading month-end close and producing high-quality financial reporting.
  • Experience managing treasury, cash flow forecasting, payroll oversight, and working capital reporting.
  • Advanced Excel and financial systems skills; experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 or similar ERP systems is desirable.
  • Strong communication skills with the credibility to work closely with executive leadership and support strategic decision-making.
