Job Title: Group Environment Carbon Manager

Contract: Initial 3 month contract, Inside IR35

Day Rate: £650 to £750 per day

Location: Remote first, with travel to London for business critical meetings

Overview

Our client, a leading global retail group, is seeking an experienced Group Environment Carbon Manager to drive the delivery of their environmental and carbon reduction agenda. This role sits within the central sustainability function and will play a pivotal part in shaping and executing the organisation's carbon strategy across multiple business units, regions and operational functions.

The position requires expertise in carbon accounting, regulatory compliance, environmental reporting and cross functional influence. You will work at pace, operate with autonomy and support the business through a complex period of sustainability transformation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage carbon accounting activities across the group, ensuring accurate calculation, tracking and reporting of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
  • Support the development and refinement of the organisation's carbon reduction strategy and roadmap
  • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations, reporting requirements and emerging standards
  • Drive improvements in carbon data quality, consistency and transparency across multiple divisions and geographies
  • Partner with senior stakeholders across operations, supply chain, property, finance, procurement and ESG teams to support measurable reduction activities
  • Deliver group wide reporting for annual ESG disclosures, regulatory submissions and internal governance forums
  • Provide expert guidance on carbon methodologies, frameworks and emerging best practice
  • Identify risks, opportunities and mitigation actions related to carbon and environmental performance
  • Work cross functionally to embed carbon considerations into decision making, investment cases and operational planning
  • Prepare and deliver updates for executive leadership, audit committees and sustainability steering groups
  • Support the business through audit processes, external assurance and verification cycles
  • Manage project plans, timelines and deliverables to ensure the organisation meets its sustainability targets
Required Skills and Experience
  • Strong experience in carbon accounting, environmental management or sustainability strategy within a large, complex organisation
  • Proven track record in compiling and managing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions data
  • Solid understanding of relevant frameworks such as GHG Protocol, SECR, ESOS, TCFD, CDP or SBTi
  • Ability to influence senior leaders and collaborate across multiple business units
  • Highly analytical mindset with strong data interpretation and reporting skills
  • Experience navigating complex governance structures and delivering to tight regulatory deadlines
  • Confident in managing audits, assurance processes and external reporting cycles
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and driving clarity in fast paced environments
  • Strong communication skills and ability to translate technical carbon topics into clear business language
  • Experience in retail, FMCG, logistics or other large multisite organisations is advantageous but not essential
