Job summary

Hyphen is seeking a part-time Graphic Designer to lead the visual identity of our digital content in the UK and Europe. The role is 20 hours per week for six months, hybrid between our central London office and home, reporting to multimedia and editors.

You will design thumbnails, carousels and brand assets that translate Hyphen's journalism into engaging visuals across platforms, collaborating with editors and the team to sustain a rapid publishing pipeline.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience designing high-performing thumbnails and carousels for social platforms.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating branding work, visual identity systems and template creation.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects) and familiarity with Figma or Canva for collaborative workflows.
  • Understanding of platform-specific design best practices, aspect ratios and performance-driven creative (A/B testing, CTR optimisation).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of accessible design principles, particularly colour contrast and inclusive colour usage.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines in a newsroom environment, managing multiple briefs simultaneously Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and a collaborative mindset.

  • Thumbnails: Design scroll-stopping YouTube and social video thumbnails that reflect Hyphen's editorial tone and boost click-through rates.
  • Carousels: Create multi-slide Instagram, LinkedIn, X and Facebook carousels that adapt longform journalism, opinion pieces, lifestyle and original content into engaging visual narratives.
  • Branding: Develop and maintain brand-consistent templates, style guides and visual systems across all platforms - ensuring Hyphen's identity is instantly recognisable.
  • Social-first storytelling: Collaborate with the multimedia and editorial team to turn written stories into platform-optimised visuals.
  • Campaign and event assets: Produce graphics for Hyphen's events, partnerships, merchandise and campaigns.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER, HYPHEN

This vacancy is for a part-time (20 hours per week) six-month fixed-term contract.

THE ROLE

Hyphen (hyphenonline.com) is the leading media platform on Muslim life in the UK and Europe. The graphic designer will lead the visual identity of Hyphen's digital content - creating high-impact thumbnails, carousels and brand assets that expand our reach and deepen audience connection across platforms.

This is a hands-on, fast-paced role focused on translating Hyphen's journalism and storytelling into compelling visual formats for social and web. You'll work closely with the multimedia team and the editors to produce multiple assets each week, maintaining a consistent publishing pipeline and experimenting with new visual formats that drive engagement.

You'll ideally have a well-rounded understanding of the interests and aspirations of Muslim communities in the UK and Europe, including news, culture, lifestyle and opinion.

YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Proven experience designing high-performing thumbnails and carousels for social platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and X)
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating branding work, visual identity systems and template creation
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects) and familiarity with Figma or Canva for collaborative workflows
  • Understanding of platform-specific design best practices, aspect ratios and performance-driven creative (A/B testing, CTR optimisation)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of accessible design principles, particularly colour contrast and inclusive colour usage
