Job summary

Westlakes Recruit is seeking a Graduate Quantity Surveyor to join the team in Wigan. This role offers a clear path from graduate to senior QS with hands-on exposure to commercial management on live projects.

You will work closely with Project Managers and site teams, supporting budgets, procurement, CVR, and final accounts while developing practical knowledge and industry insight.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or related construction discipline.
  • Good understanding of construction processes and basic QS principles.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the commercial management of construction projects from pre-construction through to completion.
  • Supporting the preparation of project budgets, cost plans and forecasts.
  • Assisting with subcontractor and supplier enquiries, tender analysis and procurement.
  • Preparing and issuing subcontract documentation and purchase orders.
  • Measuring and valuing works completed on site.
  • Assisting with interim valuations and applications for payment.
  • Reviewing subcontractor applications and supporting the preparation of payment notices.
  • Identifying, recording and valuing variations and changes to the works.
  • Monitoring project costs against budgets and reporting potential commercial risks.
  • Assisting with monthly cost value reconciliation (CVR) and commercial reporting.
  • Maintaining accurate project records and commercial documentation.
  • Working closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Attending site and commercial meetings where required.
  • Supporting the preparation and agreement of project final accounts.
  • Ensuring commercial activities are carried out in accordance with company procedures and contractual requirements.

Graduate Quantity Surveyor

About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious Graduate Quantity Surveyor to join our team in Wigan. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent Quantity Surveying graduate who is looking to begin their career within the construction industry. Working alongside experienced commercial and project teams, you will gain hands‑on experience across all aspects of quantity surveying and commercial management. You will support projects from initial procurement through to completion and final account, developing the practical knowledge and commercial awareness required to progress into a successful Quantity Surveyor.

Key Responsibilities

As a Graduate Quantity Surveyor, your responsibilities will include:

About You

We are looking for someone who is motivated to build a long‑term career in quantity surveying and commercial management. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related construction discipline.
  • A good understanding of construction processes and basic quantity surveying principles.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A proactive approach and willingness to learn.
  • Good time‑management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A full UK driving licence would be advantageous.
  • Previous construction experience, including a placement year or summer work experience, would be beneficial but is not essential. We are primarily looking for the right attitude, willingness to learn and desire to develop within the industry.
