Overview

As part of ORE Catapult's (OREC) mission to accelerate offshore renewable technologies, this role contributes directly to the safe and effective operation of world-leading high voltage test facilities. By supporting industry projects and research programmes, the Test Engineer helps validate and advance technology readiness levels, enabling deployment of clean energy solutions. The purpose is to support the design, operation and development of high voltage testing programmes, from receipt of the test piece through planning, execution, data analysis, and final reporting. This includes managing defined project tasks and producing high-quality technical outputs.

Position: We are seeking a Junior or Graduate HV Test Engineer with an interest in renewable energy to join our team delivering comprehensive testing and consultancy services for customers and collaborators. As part of ORE Catapult’s mission to accelerate offshore renewable technologies, this role supports the safe and efficient operation of high-voltage (HV) test processes within our facilities. By contributing to UKAS-accredited testing, technology validation, and continuous improvement activities, the Test Engineer will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of renewable energy technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out testing on renewable energy projects at ORE Catapult Blyth.
  • Support in the setup and configuration of test pieces, electrical systems, and instrumentation.
  • Support the design of test programs and test plans to meet customer/regulatory requirements.
  • Operate HV test equipment and acquire data in line with defined procedures.
  • Analyse test data and author technical reports suitable for internal and external clients.
  • Support failure investigations, capture lessons learned, and contribute to process improvements.
  • Perform basic HSE management tasks (e.g. risk assessments, safety checks, training).
  • Work with engineers, technicians, and project managers across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Assist in the development of facility improvements, test processes, and R&D activities.
  • Support the Maintenance Team to ensure test rigs and systems are safe, compliant, and operational before and during testing.
Accountability
  • Safe and compliant operation of HV test processes, from planning through to post-test reporting.
  • Customer satisfaction through accurate test execution, report quality, and technical support.
  • Supporting continuation of UKAS accreditation and adherence to relevant test standards.
  • Ensuring test setups and supporting systems are safe, compliant, and reliable.
  • Ensuring all test activities comply with SHEQ legislation and ORE Catapult standards.
Requirements

What are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Some exposure to electrical testing or validation (through study, project work, or placement).
  • Highly computer literate.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical work to engineering peers.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, data analysis, or documentation under supervision.
  • Ability to work flexibly around testing requirements.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of instrumentation, calibration, or measurement systems.
  • Awareness of IEC 17025 standards.
  • Client-facing or externally collaborative experience.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy systems and electrical networks.
  • Experience with principles of testing, failure modes, control systems, or engineering design.
