Overview

Responsibilities

The Graduate Estimator's role is to work with existing estimators and operational teams to learn how to complete and lead estimates for civil engineering works using the Company's estimating systems and procedures. You will learn to develop solutions to efficiently meet our customers' requirements that secure sufficient work by value and type to meet the company's objectives and, with experience, move into an estimator role in your own right. Learn how to undertake estimates for multi-disciplinary civils or rail projects following Company procedures, including:

  • Developing a tender win and delivery strategy collaboratively with the business unit operational teams
  • Building on the win strategy to develop a coherent and consistent tender submission with the use of key estimating assumptions.
  • Identifying opportunity and risk during the tender process.
  • Liaising with the business unit, Bid Manager and Planner to agree on methodology and principles.
  • Maintaining a register of key assumptions within estimates
  • Maintaining the tender estimate file.
  • Providing indicative pricing support for business development.
  • Engaging with supply chain, including designers, to develop and price the delivery solution, whilst minimising risk and cost
  • Obtaining feedback from site teams on estimating adequacy and current costs.
  • Present estimates at adjudication
  • Prepare estimating "adjudication pack."
  • Present basis of estimate and key assumptions
  • Maintain notes of adjudication meetings
  • Close out actions and monitor customer negotiations, seeking amended authority as required.
  • Handover to site teams at contract award
  • Prepare estimating handover packs.
  • Maintain notes of the handover meeting
  • Provide ongoing support to site teams relating to the estimate and key assumptions.
Qualifications
  • Degree in a related Engineering qualification or equivalent
  • Numerate and IT literate, familiar with estimating software and Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel
  • Confidence in dealing with customers and personnel within Barhale at a senior level
  • Ability to ensure all tender submissions are both feasible and profitable
  • Willing to work as part of the work-winning team and to take all opportunities to learn about the business and technical delivery methods employed by the business
Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge of wastewater, rail, or the tunnelling sector
  • Driving licence
