Job description
Overview

Graduate Civil Engineer — Sheffield — (2-3 Years Exp)

Ready to step out of the graduate box and take full technical ownership of complex civil engineering designs? If you are a driven Civil Engineer with around 2 to 3 years of experience looking for a genuine fast-track to Chartership (ICE/IStructE), this is your chance. We are working with a leading, well-established engineering consultancy in Sheffield that specialises in major UK development infrastructure. This role offers the perfect platform to transition from a Graduate role into a design-responsible Engineer, working directly under an experienced Associate who is dedicated to mentoring your career. This isn\'t just a job; it\'s a defined path to professional qualification and senior status.

The Opportunity: Project Ownership

You will play a pivotal role in the successful delivery of diverse development schemes (housing, commercial, and industrial). Your technical expertise will be crucial across the entire project lifecycle, from initial concept right through to final technical approvals and construction.

Responsibilities
  • Detailed Infrastructure Design: Producing final drawings and calculations for technical approvals (Building Control, NHBC), with a special focus on adoptable works including S278/S38 Highways and S104 Drainage agreements.
  • Pre-Planning Expertise: Leading the resolution of planning conditions by completing pre-purchase feasibility studies, drainage feasibility reports, and providing highways advice.
  • Ground Modelling: Preparation of 3D ground models for highly accurate volume calculations, cut and fill exercises, and defining vertical road profiles.
  • Hydrology: Contributing to Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs), and designing sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and pre-planning solutions.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Acting as a key technical point of contact for clients, Local Highway Authorities (LHAs), Water Authorities, and the Environment Agency.
  • Professional Development: Taking ownership of your career progression by proactively working towards achieving your Chartered Engineer status.
Candidate Requirements
  • Education: A degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering.
  • Experience: Approximately 2 to 3 years of post-graduate experience, gained within a UK engineering consultancy environment.
  • Design Knowledge: Proven working experience in designing and detailing highways and drainage schemes to adoption standards (S38, S278, S104).
  • Software Proficiency: Working experience with key hydraulic and CAD packages such as MicroDrainage (WinDES).
  • Note: While not essential, experience with AutoCAD/Autodesk Civil 3D and/or flood modelling software (Tuflow, HECRAS) would be a significant advantage.
  • Foundational Knowledge: A strong understanding of Civil Engineering principles, current industry standards, and best practice regarding SuDS and FRAs.
Benefits & Culture

This firm prides itself on fostering a supportive, technically excellent, and genuinely non-corporate culture. They invest heavily in their people, ensuring you have the tools and mentorship to succeed.

Reasons to Join:

  • Chartership Support: A robust, ICE-accredited training scheme with dedicated time and resources, including one-to-one mentorship from your Associate-level report.
  • Career Trajectory: Clear, merit-based pathway for progression to Engineer and Senior Engineer grades.
  • Flexibility: A focus on work-life balance, including flexible working arrangements.
  • Professional Perks: Payment of professional institution fees and a competitive benefits package.

This is a chance to accelerate your career in a dynamic Sheffield office, gain project leadership exposure, and achieve your goal of becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer faster.
