As a Health Care Assistant at SMW, you will be a vital part of a practice that is committed to delivering high-quality, thoughtful, responsive care to all our patients, tailored to their individual needs. You will work alongside a diverse clinical team, which includes GPs, practice nurses, pharmacists, and a social prescriber.

Main duties of the job

As an HCA at Stanhope Mews Surgery (SMW), you'll perform a range of hands‑on clinical and supportive tasks essential to primary care delivery. Your main duties will focus on direct patient care and supporting the clinical team in diagnostics and preventive health measures.

You will be joining a highly professional and collaborative environment:

The Team: The clinical staff is diverse, comprising GPs, practice nurses, health care assistant, pharmacists, First Contact physiotherapist, and a social prescriber. Our support staff includes a dedicated reception team often the first point of contact along with administrative and clerical staff, all overseen by the practice manager and his deputy. We also work closely with the allied 'My Care My Way' health and social care team for older adults.

Job responsibilities

The HCA will undertake the following clinical and administrative duties:

Diagnostic and Monitoring

  • Phlebotomy:Perform phlebotomy duties, including taking blood samples efficiently and accurately.
  • Specimen Handling: Take and, where appropriate, despatch laboratory specimens (including blood, urine, swabs, and other diagnostic tests) as required by GPs.
  • Logistics: Ensure specimens are ready for collection by the designated time, or alternatively, store them correctly in the fridge for next‑day collection.
  • ECG: Setting up the ECG machine to take electrocardiograms and sending them to be read by a GP.
  • AF Screening: Conducting 1‑lead ECG Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Screening for appropriate patient groups (e.g., patients aged 55 and over).
  • Blood Pressure Monitoring: Carrying out routine blood pressure checks and fitting and removal of the 24‑hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor (ABPM).

Preventive Health and Management

  • NHS Health Checks: Conduct NHS Health Checks (offered to everyone without a long‑term condition aged 40 to 72). This includes patient education on results and next steps.
  • Chronic Disease Management: Assisting with routine investigations for chronic disease management, such as gathering blood test results and conducting preliminary lifestyle questions.
  • Injections and Vaccinations: Administering injections, including B12 and routine vaccinations (e.g., flu and pneumococcal infection) under a Patient Specific Direction (PSD).
  • Patient Education: Advise patients on basic health care, minor ailments, health promotion, and illness prevention.

  • Demonstrated good written communication skills for accurate documentation and effective electronic patient correspondence.
  • Experience with managing clinical logistics, such as handling and preparing laboratory specimens for collection.
  • Experience in patient education or providing advice on health promotion and illness prevention.

Depending on experience£17 - £19 per hour
