About the team and what we do

We are currently recruiting for 2 roles. One opportunity on a permanent contract and one as a fixed terms 12 month contract. The Governance Team sits at the centre of how we ensure transparency, accountability and effective oversight at the NMC. We support the Executive, Council and its committees, uphold our statutory and regulatory responsibilities, and safeguard the integrity of our decision-making. From organising Executive Board and Council business to overseeing statutory reporting and member recruitment, we play a vital role in ensuring the NMC delivers on its public interest mission with clarity and credibility.

This role provides direct support to our Executive Board and Council so therefore office attendance in London will be on a regular basis.

Your role and impact

This is an exciting opportunity to work in NMC’s Governance Team and play a full role in supporting and delivering high-quality governance at every level. As Governance Manager, you’ll provide high quality support to the Board, Council, committee chairs, partner members and senior leadership. You’ll support a range of activities from constitutional compliance and statutory reporting to member recruitment, induction, and development. Your strong planning, organising and administrative skills will ensure our governance structures are run efficiently and reflect best practice and the highest standards of public service.

Some of what you will do
  • Provide high quality secretariat support to a range of meetings, including producing accurate minutes.
  • Provide effective scrutiny of papers ensuring quality standards are maintained.
  • Manage the annual effectiveness reviews for Council / Committees / Boards, ensuring compliance with best practice.
  • Ensure the smooth conduct of Council / Committee / Board business, including logistical and all other arrangements.
  • Provide support on the recruitment, induction, development and appraisal processes for Council, committees and partner members.
  • Provide draft content for key statutory outputs, including the Annual Report and Accounts and the Annual Fitness to Practise report.
  • Contribute to the redesign and implementation of revised governance frameworks, including the review of policies and processes.

  • Knowledge and experience of working in governance.
  • Understanding of statutory and constitutional frameworks and good governance practice.
  • Excellent minute-taking and report-writing skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience advising senior leaders and board members.
  • Knowledge and experience of utilising and embedding new technology / systems to improve governance processes.
  • A collaborative, confident and detail-focused approach, with a commitment to high standards and public service values.
