Job summary

Mott MacDonald Bentley is recruiting a Geotechnical Engineer to join the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA). The role focuses on geotechnical sampling and testing ahead of pipelaying activity, supporting construction, and ensuring compaction and backfill meet pipe design requirements.

You will collect samples, perform site tests, and liaise with site teams to plan pipe laying while maximizing reuse of excavated material as bedding and surround.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should have a degree in geotechnical engineering or soil mechanics.
  • Experience in geotechnical design and analysis is desirable.
  • Experience in carrying out physical geotechnical sampling and testing.
  • Proactive, practical approach with the ability to work on-site with teams.

Job description

Mott MacDonald Bentley are recruiting for a Geotechnical Engineer to join the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA).

The 330km Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) Project by Anglian Water is under construction and will be completed during AMP8. Beyond this we have a further 260km of water transfer pipelines and associated infrastructure to be delivered in AMP8.

What will you be doing as our new Geotechnical Engineer?

In this role, you will be undertaking geotechnical sampling and testing in advance of SPA pipelaying activity. You will support construction activities and ensure compaction and backfill is undertaken in accordance with the pipeline design requirements whilst maximising the utilisation of excavated material as pipeline bedding and surround.

The role will involve gathering of samples and undertaking site-based testing to support the engineering assessment of excavated materials. You will be required to liaise with site teams in undertaking these works and advance planning for pipe laying; providing technical support to the central SPA geotechnical team.

Key responsibilities:
  • Undertake in advance of pipeline construction Dynamic Cone Penetrometer & hand shear vane testing to confirm pipe design bedding class requirements, required temporary trench design based on site test data collected, and supervise trial excavations including soil logging.
  • Plan and undertake intermittent earthwork construction trials to validate compaction requirement adjacent to the pipe trench in advance of pipe laying to negate the requirement for compaction validation and man entry into the trench.
  • Plan additional investigations, sampling and testing where required to confirm soil classification.
  • Support planning of options to move suitable materials along the pipeline to maximise reuse as bedding and surround to limit any requirements for import.
