Job summary

Wood Thilsted is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Site Characterisation team in the UK. You will contribute to offshore wind projects from feasibility through to construction, under senior supervision while taking ownership of your tasks.

The ideal candidate holds a Master's or PhD in civil/geotechnical engineering, has 2+ years of experience, speaks fluent English, and can work with MATLAB for analysis and software development.

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in civil/geotechnical engineering.
  • English fluency (speaking and writing).
  • Minimum 2 years of professional engineer experience.
  • Experience or knowledge of geotechnical engineering for offshore wind farms.
  • Experience designing monopiles, pin piles and suction caissons.
  • Experience with design codes/guidelines (API, Eurocode, DIN, DNV-OS-J101).
  • Ability to write software or scripts (e.g., MATLAB) for engineering analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Support multiple projects across WT's portfolio in offshore geotechnical design and analysis.
  • Under guidance from senior staff, develop and drive your own career.
  • Lead geotechnical site investigation campaigns and data interpretation.
  • Prepare geotechnical interpretive reports and design profiles.
  • Engage in R&D activities and develop in-house software.

As part of our long‑term vision, we are searching for a highly capable and motivated Geotechnical Engineer to join one of our UK offices in either Bristol, London or Edinburgh.

The Team

You will join the Geotechnical Design & Analysis Department within WT’s Site Characterisation Business Unit. Our team of world‑class geotechnical engineers delivers innovative, sustainable and optimised solutions which empower clients to achieve their renewable energy goals with greater speed and efficiency through strong commitment to technical excellence, innovation and collaboration.

The team is supporting and developing offshore geotechnical data survey campaign and laboratory testing, preparation of specifications and data review activities ensuring clients’ surveys deliver high quality data to optimise engineering solutions. We undertake interpretation of geotechnical data for derivation of input design parameters as well as design of offshore foundations using in-house and commercial tools including scour design and cable engineering.

Areas of responsibility

As a geotechnical engineer you will be providing support to a number of projects across our portfolio of work. You will be under close support and guidance from our senior members of staff whilst maintaining control and drive of your own career.

Typical areas of work are likely to include:

  • Solving civil engineering problems related to the planning, development, design and construction of offshore wind farms
  • Designing and technical management of offshore geotechnical site investigation campaigns
  • Specifying and processing laboratory test results (advanced and cyclic)
  • Preparing geotechnical interpretive reports and geotechnical design profiles
  • Soil structure interaction and geotechnical foundation design assessments
  • 3D finite element modelling
  • Foundation installation assessments
  • Prepare Design Briefs and engage in certification processes
  • Support technical leads on projects from concept stage through to detailed design
  • Engage in R&D activities
  • Develop in-house engineering software

Your background: You should hold a master's degree or PhD in civil, geotechnical engineering or equivalent. You should thrive in an international environment and speak and write English fluently. You have a strong drive and take initiative and responsibility for your assignments, and you get motivated by creating excellent results through teamwork.

Furthermore, it is advantageous if you:

  • Have minimum 2 years of relevant experience as a professional engineer
  • Are highly numerate and have experience of developing / writing your own software using programs such as MATLAB
  • Have knowledge / experience with geotechnical engineering related to offshore wind farms
  • Have experience with design of monopiles, pin piles and suction caissons
  • Have experience with design codes / guidelines such as API, Eurocode, DIN, DNV-OS-J101
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with clients and other consultants effectively
