The successful candidate will form part of a team of geologists, geotechnical specialists and geo-environmental consultants who pride themselves on being able to offer robust assessments relating to geotechnical considerations and soil and groundwater contamination. In conjunction with the wider engineering team at PJA, we provide a diverse range of services from preliminary due diligence assessments associated with land acquisitions, to the design and oversight of effective holistic ground solutions to enable the development of both brownfield and greenfield sites for a range of clients.

The successful candidate should ideally have between 3 and 6 years’ relevant post-graduate experience and should be able to demonstrate a grounding in consultancy. A keenness to learn about all areas of geotechnical assessment, and an interest in geo-environmental engineering and their interface with land development is crucial.

The responsibilities for this position are anticipated to include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Preparation of Phase 1 Desk Studies and completion of site walkovers;
  • Design, procurement and monitoring of site investigations, including managing contractors;
  • Soil sampling and logging in accordance with relevant standards.
  • Gas and groundwater monitoring and sampling;
  • Scheduling of chemical and geotechnical laboratory testing;
  • Critically reviewing contractors’ factual data and reports;
  • Preparation of Phase 2 geo-environmental interpretative reports;
  • Preparation of geotechnical reports in accordance with CD622: Managing Geotechnical Risk
  • Develop geotechnical ground models for use in design;
  • Appraisal of potential ground engineering constraints;
  • Preparation of preliminary foundation zoning plans;
  • Providing input to earthworks specifications;
  • Monitoring earthworks construction;
  • Preparation of Earthworks Validation Reporting;
  • Assisting with preparation of fee proposals for clients;
  • Preparation of site-specific health and safety risk assessments for site work;
The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate should have experience in the use of ground investigation data management software such as Openground and have excellent MS Word and Excel skills. Some experience of AutoCAD and/or GIS software is also beneficial.

The successful candidate will be required to prepare clear and concise technical reports and other written communications, and they should be able to demonstrate that they can achieve this to a high standard, while demonstrating good organisational skills and working to tight deadlines. Verbal communication is also of key importance, and the successful candidate will be able to confidently communicate with peers, mentor junior staff, and communicate with more senior colleagues, contractors and internal and external clients. Good commercial awareness is required to ensure work is undertaken within the time allowed and within budget, some project management experience would be beneficial.

Applicants will ideally have membership of a professional organisation such as the Geological Society of London or the ICE and should be demonstrating an ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development and be working towards chartership.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in our Birmingham office, however the candidate must have a willingness to regularly travel to and from sites around the UK for site work and meetings. Occasional overnight travel may be required.

As a member of the PJA team, you can expect:
  • An attractive and modern working environment with good accessibility by all modes of transport
  • The opportunity to progress quickly within the firm
  • A wide range of challenging projects
  • Ongoing support, training and mentoring from senior professionals within the business with a real commitment from senior management towards personal and professional development
