Job description
Role Overview

Applications are invited for motivated general practitioners with a special interest in mental illness to provide one day per week medical input within North View, a new 150‑bed psychiatric hospital in North Manchester. The hospital comprises 9 wards: 7 general adult wards, 1 women's older adults’ ward and a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Responsibilities
  • Conduct medical reviews of inpatients usually seen by their community GP for primary‑care level issues, especially those previously managed by the patient’s GP prior to admission.
  • Advise inpatient doctors who are not specialists in the management of life‑long/chronic physical illness in evidence‑based and up‑to‑date protocols for treatment of conditions such as hypertension, leg swelling, asthma, COPD, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia, chronic pain and dermatological conditions.
  • Address queries of inpatient psychiatric doctors regarding the indication and necessity of specific physical‑health medications prescribed prior to admission to avoid unnecessary side‑effects, interactions and aid deprescribing improving outcomes for patients.
  • When needed, provide a second opinion on the necessity of escalation of care to acute medical/surgical wards when the decision is complex.
  • Support patients to access relevant national screening programmes.
  • Review patients ready for discharge with regards to appropriateness for shared‑care prescribing of antipsychotics by GPs.
