Job summary

Site-based Laboratory Engineer role in Cambridge on a 5-day, Monday to Friday schedule. You will work in controlled lab environments requiring PPE, performing maintenance, fault diagnosis and documentation for lab equipment across centrifuges, incubators, and other instruments. Strong communication and analytical skills are essential.

The role emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance and timely spare parts management, with opportunities to influence process improvements in a fast-paced facility.

Qualifications

  • Experience within the Laboratory Instrument Support sector across a wide range of scientific equipment.
  • Ideal candidate will be currently working as a laboratory engineer with any of centrifuges, incubators, balances, vacuum pumps, fridges, freezers, water purifiers, plate washers/readers.
  • Strong relationship management and excellent communication/influencing skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative but remain team-oriented with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical skills with logical, structured problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Provide prompt, flexible, customer-focused equipment support while complying with statutory, regulatory and engineering standards.
  • Diagnose faults on complex equipment using multidisciplinary support to reach satisfactory solutions.
  • Plan and carry out maintenance and commissioning of scientific equipment safely and cost-effectively.
  • Create and review service reports and supporting documentation.
  • Support users in designing operating procedures, SOPs, Change Control and deviation handling.
  • Manage availability of essential spares to support equipment and systems used in R&D facilities.
  • Support contract management for set-up, renewal and budgeting of contracts.
  • Monitor performance of equipment with KPIs and drive improvements.
  • Support PKI Management Team to ensure completion of activities.
  • Prepare risk assessments/method statements prior to work; adhere to health and safety policies.
  • Follow health and safety duties and report incidents; wear PPE as required.
  • Occasionally move between labs and facilities; may require medical clearance and PPE training.

Job description

  • Ensure prompt, flexible, customer-focused equipment support whilst maintaining compliance with statutory, regulatory and engineering standards
  • Diagnose faults on complex equipment and systems utilizing the multi-disciplinary support internal and external to the team to produce a satisfactory solution
  • Plan & carry out engineering maintenance and commissioning work associated with scientific equipment and systems in a safe, cost-effective manner to ensure minimum business disruption
  • Use technical knowledge to identify and source components and services
  • Create, manage and review supporting documentation e.g. service reports
  • Support users in the preparation/design of operating procedures, SOPs, Change Control and the deviation, manuals and drawings
  • Manage the availability of essential spares to support the range of equipment and systems used within the R&D facilities in a cost-effective manner
  • Support contract management in the set-up, renewal and budget of contracts
  • Monitor the performance of the scientific equipment and systems using Key Performance Indicators to instigate improvements and influence changes
  • Support to PKI Management Team to ensure all activities are completed
  • Ensure that a full and detailed task specific Risk Assessment/Method Statement is completed prior to any work commencing
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of other people who could be affected by their acts or omissions
  • Report any accidents or near misses that they experience, or witness, to their Line Management
  • Co-operate and assist in all aspects of health and safety procedures introduced by management for their well-being
  • Wear personal protective equipment when conditions require or when required to do so by the relevant risk assessment, method statement or mandatory signage

  • L3 engineering discipline.
  • PC literate in Microsoft packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc).
Working Environment:
  • Role is site based on a customer site in Cambridge, 5 day a week, Monday to Friday.
  • Must be able to work in a laboratory, controlled environments requiring personal protective equipment (e.g., lab coat, safety glasses, etc.) in laboratory.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position more than 25% of the time.
  • The person needs to occasionally move between labs, corridors, adjoining rooms, and buildings onsite Frequently operating around instruments, objects, tools or controls, which will require regularly bending, squatting, stretching and reaching in order to perform in a service function.
  • May be required to complete Medical Clearance, Respiratory Protection Training, and Fit Testing to wear a respirator as protection against hazards present in the laboratory environment.
