Job summary

AP Education is seeking a dedicated Functional Skills Tutor (1:1) in Haverhill, Suffolk. This role offers up to 15 hours per week during term time, with a competitive hourly rate of £30-£35 and flexible hours to fit your schedule.

You will support KS3–KS4 students on a 1:1 basis, delivering Functional Skills or SEND curricula, employing positive behaviour strategies, and coordinating with external professionals to tailor learning. A DBS check is required and training is provided.

Qualifications

• Proven experience teaching or tutoring children with SEND/SEMH.
• Background in education, youth work, or therapeutic settings.
• QTS or HLTA certification preferred; however, applicants with a minimum of two years' UK experience welcome.
• Experience delivering the Functional Skills curriculum to a high standard.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Compassionate, dependable, and initiative-taking mindset.

Responsibilities

• Provide face-to-face 1:1 support for students from KS3 to KS4.
• Deliver the Functional Skills Curriculum or SEND-specific curriculum.
• Implement effective behaviour management using positive strategies and patience.
• Provide a therapeutic and adaptable approach to education, ensuring each learner's needs are met.
• Perform baseline academic and emotional assessments to inform targeted support and intervention.
• Prepare detailed daily/weekly progress reports and liaise with external professionals to facilitate a collaborative approach.
• Manage daily attendance reporting via attendance software.
• Assist learners in transitioning to mainstream or specialist education settings as appropriate.

Hourly Rate: £30-35

AP Education collaborates with local authorities in delivering customised 1:1 Alternative Provision for children and young people who are unable to access a mainstream education setting. We seek dedicated SEND/SEMH Tutors, SEND/SEMH Teachers, and HLTAs in Haverhill, Suffolk and the surrounding regions.

Responsibilities

• Provide face-to-face 1:1 support, working with students from KS3 to KS4.
• Deliver the Functional Skills Curriculum or SEND-specific curriculum.
• Implement effective behaviour management using positive strategies and patience.
• Provide a therapeutic and adaptable approach to education, ensuring each learner's individual needs are met.
• Perform baseline academic and emotional assessments to inform targeted support and intervention.
• Prepare detailed daily/weekly progress reports and, where necessary, liaise with external professionals such as SALT, OT, or Social Workers to facilitate a collaborative, multi-agency approach.
• Manage daily attendance reporting via our attendance software.
• Assist learners in transitioning to mainstream or specialist education settings as appropriate.

Candidate Profile

• Proven experience teaching or tutoring children with SEND/SEMH requirements.
• Background in education, youth work, or therapeutic settings.
• QTS or HLTA certification preferred; however, applicants with a minimum of two years' relevant UK experience without qualifications are welcome.
