Job summary

A leading defence education provider seeks a Functional Skills Tutor to coach Army apprentices in English and Maths at MOD Lyneham. The role – As a Functional Skills Tutor, you’ll be at the heart of our mission to support Army apprentices in achieving essential qualifications in English and Maths. This is a learner‑focused role where your tailored teaching and coaching will directly impact individual success and strengthen Babcock’s reputation in defence education. You’ll be helping apprentices build confidence, develop core skills, and progress through their career journey making a real difference to their lives and to the future of our armed forces.

Day‑to‑day you’ll be:

  • Coaching learners through their qualification journey with personalised support
  • Adapting teaching methods to suit diverse learning styles and additional needs
  • Tracking progress, providing feedback, and preparing learners for final assessments
  • Collaborating with internal teams to uphold quality standards and meet performance targets

Delivering engaging English and Maths sessions to small groups of Army apprentices

The role is based onsite at MOD Lyneham, and the set working times are Monday to Thursday – 8am to 4.30pm, Friday – 8am to 4pm, totalling 37 hours per week.

Essential experience of the Functional Skills Tutor:

  • Proven experience in delivering Functional Skills English and Maths
  • A strong understanding of Safeguarding responsibilities
  • Demonstrates a high level of organisational skills

Qualifications for the Functional Skills Tutor:

  • A recognised training qualification
  • GCSE grade C or above / grade 4–9 (or equivalent) in Maths and English

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
