Job description

At Open, we believe insurance does not have to be complicated or costly. We're an AI-powered platform transforming insurance globally — making it more transparent, cost-effective, and customer friendly. Since launching in 2016, we've grown into a certified B Corporation, operating across ANZ and the UK.

Engineering is how we earn the trust of our partners and customers. The UK is where our next chapter happens, and this role is one of the first engineering hires into it: you'll be building the integrations our UK partners run on, and helping keep them live.

What you'll do

You’ll work on Open Embedded, our flagship product. It lets brands offer car, home, travel, landlord and purchase-protection insurance inside their own customer journeys, configured no-code by our partners, and run end to end by us from quote through to claim.

Where this role sits .

Core feature development and major platform uplifts are owned by our engineering team in Australia. The UK team's remit is the UK end: partner requirements and integrations, configuring and extending the platform to meet them, and keeping it running. You'll be hands‑on in the same codebase, shipping changes yourself.

Reporting to the Senior Full-Stack Engineer, you'll work alongside our partner‑facing colleagues, Product, TechOps and Solution Architecture, and day to day with the AU engineering team. You're joining a small UK team early — more scope than usual, and more support to grow into it.

This is a hands‑on role: most of your week is building and debugging — writing production code across the stack and working through integration problems. You'll take work from ambiguous to shipped with a senior engineer close by, and we expect that distance to grow shorter over time.

You’ll be measured on three things:

  • Build and ship UK partner integrations — taking pieces of a partner journey from requirement to live.
  • Get close to what a partner actually needs: what our platform already does, what can be configured, and what needs building.
  • Turn that into working software — configuration and extension where our platform allows it, a clear write‑up of the gap where it doesn’t.
  • Join the technical conversations with a partner's engineers, and own the follow‑ups.
  • Give your team an early, honest read on how your work is tracking — no surprise slips.
  • Keep cutting the time from partner signature to live journey, using modern software delivery and agentic development.
AI‑native ways of working
  • Work paired with agents across your own workflow — design, code, review, test, ops and integration debugging — and keep raising your bar for how fast you can ship well.
  • Use agents to take the repetitive weight out of partner support: triage, log analysis, first‑line diagnosis and reporting.
  • Build with the evaluations, guardrails and human‑in‑the‑loop patterns that let us deploy GenAI safely in a regulated industry.
  • Form your own view on which problems an agent should own end to end versus assist on, backed by evidence from your own work.
  • Bring what you find back to the team — in a small group, one person's better workflow becomes everyone's fast.
Platform resilience
  • Help keep the platform healthy in region: availability, incident response and engineering health, alongside the Senior Full-Stack Engineer.
  • Join the on‑call rotation once you're up to speed. Debug production across a partner boundary you don't control, then write the honest post‑incident note.
  • Write code others can change without fear: tested where it counts, observable in production, documented where the reasoning isn't obvious.
  • Make sound design calls within your remit, and know which to bring to your Senior Full‑Stack Engineer, the AU team or our solution architects.
  • Work with TechOps, Solution Architecture and InfoSec on reliability, security and governance — including UK and EU data‑residency considerations.
  • Feed what you learn from partners and incidents back to the team.
Who this role isn't for

Specifically, it's probably not the right fit if:

  • You want a fully specified ticket queue. Partner requirements arrive ambiguous and commercially loaded — you'll have help, but you'll be part of doing it, not handed the result.
  • You need greenfield to do your best work. Most of what you build extends a substantial existing platform.
  • You want to stay in one layer of the stack. In a lean team you'll be in the partner‑facing journey, the services behind it, and occasionally the infrastructure.
  • You see AI as autocomplete, rather than someone already restructuring how they work around agents.
  • You want to be shielded from partners. You won't own the commercial relationship, but you will be in technical conversations with external engineers.
  • You want a large team. For now, UK engineering is a handful of people — what you don't do doesn't get done by someone else.
What you'll bring
Required
  • 3+ years building and operating production software — shipped, maintained and run by real users, not just delivered.
  • Full‑stack range — strong on one side and genuinely competent on the other.
  • Comfortable in someone else's codebase — you can read a large system, find the right seam, and extend it safely.
  • Integration experience — you've worked against an API you don't control and debugged it when it misbehaves. You think about contracts, retries and idempotency.
  • Solid in Python and working knowledge of modern AWS — you've run production services and understand what it takes to keep them up.
  • Modern frontend — TypeScript and a component framework, with real care for the customer experience.
  • Genuinely AI‑native — you use AI agents daily, and can say specifically what changed as a result.
  • Ownership of what you ship — something you built, released and then supported.
  • Modern delivery practices — strong CI/CD, understanding why small, frequent, reversible changes win.
  • Clear communicator — the pull request description, the design note and the incident write‑up get written without being chased.
  • Judgment about scope — you ship the small useful thing now and flag the bigger problem rather than starting it quietly.
  • Bias for action — you spot issues early, fix root causes and push for simpler, faster, safer ways of working.
Preferred
  • Exposure to insurance, fintech, or regulated financial services.
  • Experience in a partner‑facing, solutions or integration engineering role alongside a core product team.
  • Experience building or consuming configurable or no‑code product platforms (embedded insurance, white‑label sales flows).
  • Having shipped something agentic to production, or worked alongside engineers building AI or ML systems.
  • Comfort with cloud‑native data warehousing (Snowflake or comparable).
  • Experience in a distributed team where the core engineering team is in another region.
  • Familiarity with AI safety practices — evaluations, red‑teaming, guardrails, human‑in‑the‑loop.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Based in London , hybrid — three days a week in the office , a rhythm that genuinely supports collaboration and the fast, high‑trust culture we've built. Flexibility on the other two days.

You’ll work closely with colleagues in Sydney, including the engineering team that owns the core platform — writing decisions down properly and an early call once or twice a week, not a permanently shifted working day.

You'll need the right to work in the United Kingdom.
Why Open?

Open is on a mission to make it easy for everyone to get the most from their insurance. Insurance is one of the world's least digitally mature industries — confusing, paper‑based and heavily intermediated. We launched in 2016 to digitise the entire insurance process, making it transparent, less costly and more reliable.

It's an exciting time to join Open and be part of a tech scale‑up. We provide our team with:

  • Highly competitive compensation, including share options — everyone shares in our success.
  • High levels of autonomy and trust so you can do your best work.
  • Growth opportunities internally — as you grow, your role can too.
  • Flexible working — we are about impact, not time at your desk, including the ability to work from anywhere.
  • Paid company parental leave, supporting all parents.
  • Bonus leave — additional paid leave to support rest and wellbeing once standard leave is used.
  • Personal development allowance for learning, wellbeing and growth.

We're proud to be an equal opportunity employer that celebrates diversity and are committed to providing an inclusive environment for all employees. If you need any adjustments to take part in our process fairly, tell us and we'll make them — you don't need to explain why.

Open is a high‑performing team that strives to achieve brilliant things every day, and we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't exactly match the job description. We're looking for people who are intellectually curious, courageous, innovative and passionate. Our culture is truly open: we're continuously challenging each other to live our values — Always open, Play to win, Be a force for good, No excuses. Most importantly, Open is for those that want to create change and have an impact. If that sounds like you, apply for this role and let's build the future of insurance together.
