Job Description

LibGen is looking to retain the services of a freelance speculative designer to develop materials featured in our policy design circles. The circles are essentially charrettes or collaborative workshops where participants deliberate scenarios set in a realistic speculative future. Circle participants hold, manipulate and consider future artifacts as a modality of discussion and embodiment that engages imagination, possibilities and decision making.

We are looking for a freelance speculative designer with a commitment to and interest in advancing racial justice to partner with LibGen staff to develop concepts, design, create, and produce materials. The materials are original, fictional works accompanied by narrative that create the feature elements of the policy design circles.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Visual AND conceptual design of speculative artefacts and supporting materials for use in workshops,
  • Production (e.g. sending files to print, possibly 3D fabrication) of said artefacts and/or experiences;
  • Website design,
  • Occasional interfacing w/clients around concepts / deliverables,
  • Other related (creative) tasks as they arise + as capacity exists.
Role Requirements

Necessary qualifications:

  • Strong mostly 2D design or art making skills (graphic design, print, digital),
  • Capacity to generate copy / content for speculative artifacts in a way that is both rooted in research and forward-thinking imagination,
  • Fluent with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and XD),
  • Experience preparing files for production and packaging items for use,
  • Enjoys collaborating, ideating + critiquing work collectively.

Additional qualifications:

  • Available at least 10 hours per week,
  • Able to organise files, track time and costs,
  • Proficient at synthesising and incorporating client feedback,
  • Can take direction from leaders of colour,
  • Embraces a generative and exploratory design process, doesn’t treat designs as precious, isn’t super attached to a specific style,
  • Is open to critique of their work and (healthy) critique culture as a practice more broadly,
  • Candidates with interest in and familiarity with policy generally are preferable, but this is not necessary to apply.
