Job summary

NatWest Group is seeking a Data Scientist for the Economic Crime Hub in Edinburgh. You will design and implement data science tools to prevent fraud, reduce customer harm and improve fraud decisioning, while engaging with fraud stakeholders to translate challenges into analytical solutions.

Qualifications

• Strong academic background in STEM disciplines such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or Computer Science.
• Experience with statistical modelling and machine learning techniques applied to fraud or other complex risk problems involving rare events.
• Ability to use data to solve business problems from hypotheses through to resolution.
• Experience with Cloud applications and platforms.
• Experience in synthesising, translating and visualising data and insights for key stakeholders.
• Knowledge of how Large Language Models and agentic AI can support fraud analysis and the controls needed.

Responsibilities

• Translate fraud and scam challenges into clear analytical questions and measurable outcomes.
• Apply software engineering and product development practices to build reusable pipelines and deploy scalable solutions in an Agile environment.
• Select, train and test machine learning models, fraud strategies and AI applications, balancing fraud detection and business value with customer impact.
• Monitor internal and third-party fraud models for performance, data quality, drift and business effectiveness.
• Investigate emerging fraud patterns and document findings for governance, audit and regulatory review.
