Job summary

ALTEN in Birmingham is seeking an experienced FPGA Design Engineer to join our aerospace and advanced electronics teams. You will design and implement FPGA solutions using VHDL for DSP and control applications, and contribute to motor control projects.

This role is on-site three days a week. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Engineering is required, with DO-254 familiarity and experience in regulated environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering; aerospace or regulated industries preferred.
  • Familiarity with DO-254 or similar safety-critical design standards.
  • Experience in aerospace or regulated environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop FPGA designs using VHDL for DSP and control system applications.
  • Implement motor control and motor drive control algorithms.
  • Ensure traceability and compliance using requirements management tools.
  • Perform debugging and validation at card level.

Job Description

As an FPGA Design Engineer, you will join our Birmingham team to support our activities within the aerospace and advanced electronics sector

  • Location: Birmingham
  • On Site: 3 days per week on-site
  • Clearance: Clearable
  • Experience Level: Mid to Senior (multiple positions available)
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop FPGA designs using VHDL for DSP and control system applications
  • Implement motor control and motor drive control algorithms
  • Work with requirements management tools to ensure traceability and compliance
  • Perform debugging and validation at card level
Qualifications
Required Skills:
  • Strong experience in FPGA development and VHDL coding
  • Experience working with DSP applications or signal processing
  • Knowledge of motor control systems and motor drive control
  • Experience with debugging at board/card level
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools and structured development processes
Required Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
  • Experience working within aerospace or regulated industries
  • Understanding of DO-254 or similar safety-critical design standards
Desirable Skills:
  • Experience developing control algorithms for motor systems
  • Ability to work from detailed specifications and implement designs independently
  • Experience balancing hands-on coding with higher-level system understanding
