Job summary

A leading materials handling equipment manufacturer in the UK is seeking an enthusiastic apprentice forklift engineer. This role offers a blend of on-the-job training at Toyota Material Handling and educational development at Stephenson College. Applicants must have GCSEs in key subjects and a strong interest in engineering. Successful candidates will gain hands-on skills, shadow experienced engineers, and work towards a Level 3 qualification while ensuring safety and compliance standards.

Job description
Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic person who is looking to learn the skills needed to develop a career as a forklift engineer. This apprenticeship role is an excellent opportunity to combine on‑the‑job working, excellent training and development and to work for the world’s No. 1 forklift truck and material handling manufacturer.

Responsibilities
  • Apply health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards relevant to lift truck or powered access machines.
  • Obtain and interpret lift truck and powered access machine technical data and repair instructions.
  • Use tools, workshop equipment, diagnostic and measuring equipment when carrying out maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance activities on lift truck and powered access machines.
  • Perform inspections on lift truck and powered access machines in compliance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).
  • Remove and replace mechanical, electrical and hydraulic components.
  • Apply diagnostic principles and problem‑solving techniques to diagnose faults on lift truck or powered access machine systems.
  • Carry out functional testing and quality checks on repaired lift truck or powered access machine components and systems.
  • Carry out repairs and make required adjustments.
  • Record or enter information – paper based or electronic (e.g., job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers’ documentation, worksheets, checklists).
  • Check and maintain stock.
  • Communicate with others verbally (e.g., colleagues and stakeholders).
  • Prepare and maintain a clean, tidy and safe working area.
  • Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks in compliance with quality, safety, sustainability and environmental standards and guidance.
  • Follow equality, diversity and inclusion procedures.
  • Store and maintain tools, workshop equipment, diagnostic and measuring equipment for maintenance and repairs.
  • Shadow with your mentor and the team to understand materials handling equipment.
  • Learn about the trucks, how they work and how to fix them.
  • Participate in block weeks at college for classroom and workshop learning.
  • Engage in online learning and development with the learning provider.
Training & Development
  • Block release training to Stephenson College, Coalville, Leicestershire.
  • On‑the‑job training.
  • Off‑the‑job training.
  • Apprentice will work towards a Lift Truck Powered Access Engineering Technician Level 3 Qualification.
