Job Overview

Forensic Engineer/ Collision Investigator – Department: Claims Management. Employment type: Permanent – Full Time. Location: Home, United Kingdom.

Working as part of a small team, the role involves investigating and reconstructing road traffic collisions and producing court‑compliant reports. Investigations typically include: examination of vehicles, images and documentation, use of traditional collision investigation techniques to consider issues of liability, damage consistency, fraud and claims validation; reading and analysing vehicle data; documentary evidence reviews, witness statements, police reports and literature; preparing detailed, technically accurate reports. As an expert witness, court attendance may be necessary along with meetings and discussions with clients and barristers. We receive instructions from solicitors, insurance companies, manufacturers and the general public. The role is office (Preston) or home based.

Typical Day

The objective is to produce impartial, accurate and comprehensive reports that assist the court in understanding collision magnitudes, fraud concerns and liability disputes. This includes pre‑litigation investigation, providing expert advice, aiding early identification of concerns, and supporting clients in settlement and case management. Work alongside GBB’s team of experts, engage in knowledge sharing and continue in‑house research projects.

Knowledge & Abilities

The role will be open to individuals who demonstrate the required qualifications and training, or who already possess the necessary experience.

Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in engineering, science or physics, or an equivalent level of learning.
  • Practical knowledge of collision investigation and relevant experience.
  • Full clean driving licence (category B).
Desirable Qualifications
  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer Status (e.g., MIET, IEng, CEng or industry‑specific recognition such as MITAI).
  • Specific Collision Investigation Qualifications (UCPD, Cert HE or equivalent).
  • Full driving licence with additional category endorsements obtained through further training.
