Job description
Overview

We are looking for a term-time (26 weeks of the year) Food Sciences Technician to join a small team working in the university’s Food Industry Centre. You’ll support Food Science students in a range of specialist teaching areas including high and low care food processing, confectionary, bakery and sensory analysis.

Responsibilities
  • collating student practical requirements
  • preparing practical classes including ordering food and consumables, setting up and clearing food areas and ensuring that equipment functions correctly and carrying out routine maintenance
  • assisting in the collation of various health and safety documents
  • supporting other technical staff to ensure the smooth running of all specialist teaching areas

As a term-time position a proportion of your salary will be regarded as holiday pay to which you will be entitled together with statutory, extra statutory and concessionary holidays.

What you’ll bring
  • With practical experience of working in food science and a knowledge of food industry health and safety requirements, you’ll provide excellent technical support for our Food Science and Technology, Food and Nutrition and Dietetics and Nutrition students.
  • Good computer skills combined with your ability to plan and prioritise will enable you to manage your workload.
  • It’s not just about work, it’s about people too. Your working knowledge of health and safety will help keep people safe and your good communication and interpersonal skills will help to connect you with students and our academic teams.
  • Additionally, by liaising with senior staff you’ll be able to:
  • introduce and support students and visitors that are new to the area
  • assist staff on training and development needs and
  • ensure that work is carried out effectively in accordance with our existing procedures
