Job summary

Environment Agency in Worthing is seeking a Senior Advisor in Fluvial Flood Risk Modelling to join our Evidence Services. You will support six Fluvial Delivery Teams and provide technical assurance on flood risk models.

You will communicate complex modelling concepts to non-experts, mentor colleagues, and contribute to cross-team training and standards within the FCRM Directorate.

Job Description

We're looking for a Senior Advisor in Fluvial Flood Risk Modelling to join our Technical Delivery Teams. As a Senior Advisor working in Evidence Services, you'll be responsible for supporting and providing assurance to complex and high-profile flood risk modelling.

You will be an excellent communicator, with expertise in fluvial flood risk models, how flood models support risk assessment and judgement and the ability to explain complexity and uncertainty in flood risk. You will have a track record of creating new and re-using existing flood risk models and coaching others to do the same.

You will work alongside a group of other experts supporting flood hydrology and fluvial flood risk and coastal flood risk modelling. You will support 6 Fluvial Delivery Teams technically, and provide input to ways of working, skills and training. The role will also work across the FCRM Directorate, especially with our Risk Assessment/Head of Flood Risk Mapping and Modelling colleagues, through Centres of Excellence.

The team

Evidence Services sits within Digital, Data and Evidence in Flood and Coastal Risk Management.

Experience / Skills Required

You will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Expert knowledge and technical leadership in flood modelling and hydrology.
  • Expert knowledge and / or considerable experience in building hydraulic flood models in a fluvial setting. Considerable experience in industry standard hydraulic flood modelling and GIS software packages to develop those flood models.
  • Experience in data processing and management, and Geographical Information System (GIS) software packages.
  • Mentoring and coaching skills, as well as a commitment to continuous development.
  • Ability to work alone, as well as part of team, to make decisions and solve problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly of complex problems to non-expert audiences.
  • A curious, open, and inclusive mindset, with a commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity.
  • Influencing and persuading skills.
