Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is expanding its national flood forecasting capability within the Sustainable Water Management team and is seeking experienced flood forecast modellers and hydrologists to deliver real time modelling projects across the UK and internationally.

You will mentor junior modellers, lead projects and help develop innovative forecasting solutions while maintaining high safety and quality standards, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients across sectors.

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of UK flood forecasting techniques and tools.
• Experience delivering and reviewing real time models for UK statutory bodies such as EA, SEPA, NRW or DfI.
• Commercial awareness and ability to support or lead proposal development.

Responsibilities

• Deliver and lead flood forecast modelling and hydrology studies using Flood Modeller, PDM and hydrodynamic routing.
• Prepare and review model boundaries, undertake rating reviews and performance testing.

A Little More About Your Role …

We are expanding our UK flood forecasting capability within the Sustainable Water Management team and are looking for experienced flood forecast modellers and hydrologists at all levels. You will help deliver and grow our national programme of real time modelling projects, working alongside fluvial and pluvial specialists, hydrologists and modellers across the UK and internationally.

This is a chance to take on varied, meaningful work that improves flood warning, strengthens national resilience and supports major infrastructure, government and water sector clients.

Work on high impact, real time flood forecasting

You will contribute to flood warning improvements and real time modelling that directly supports public safety and national infrastructure.

Develop and influence our forecasting services

You will help shape technical approaches, introduce innovation and contribute to the growth of our forecasting capability.

Collaborate with experts across the UK and globally

You will work with multidisciplinary teams and be part of WSPs international Practice Area Network in flood and weather forecasting.

Grow your leadership and technical profile

From mentoring junior colleagues to taking technical ownership of projects, you will have visibility and influence across the team.

Your work will be varied and challenging and is likely to include the following:

• Deliver and, where appropriate, lead flood forecast modelling and hydrology studies using tools such as Flood Modeller, PDM and hydrodynamic routing.
• Prepare and review model boundaries, undertake rating reviews and complete performance testing.
• Carry out quality assurance and independent technical reviews of forecast products.
• Produce clear, high quality client and public facing deliverables and contribute to the visualisation of complex data.
• Support the development of WSPs flood forecasting service offering.
• Mentor less experienced modellers.
• Support or lead bid proposals and help develop innovative solutions for clients.
• Manage project delivery including commercial, financial and stakeholder aspects.
• Collaborate with UK and international WSP teams.
• Promote a safety first approach in line with WSP policies procedures.

Your Team

Our national fluvial and pluvial modelling team deliver flood modelling (real time and non-real time) to support a broad portfolio of work including flood warning improvements, FCERM studies and strategic infrastructure projects (including working across the energy, transport, government and water sectors). As an experienced flood forecast modeller, you will be a part of the growing UK based real time modelling capacity and support the development of more junior colleagues as well as being part of the WSP international Practice Area Network looking at flood and weather forecasting.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate …

• Strong understanding of UK flood forecasting techniques, Flood Modeller, rating review, PDM and performance testing.
• Experience delivering and reviewing real time models, including work for UK statutory bodies such as EA, SEPA, NRW or DfI.
• Commercial awareness, including supporting or leading proposal development.
• Ability to engage confidently with clients and stakeholders at all levels.
• Excellent communication, technical review and analytical skills.
• Chartership or a commitment to achieving it.
• Experience with non-real-time modelling is an advantage.
