Job summary

SILA Linguists is actively seeking freelance Sylheti interpreters for healthcare, social care, legal and education work across the UK. Opportunities include telephone, video or face-to-face interpreting with standard Bengali written translation when qualified.

Assignments span GP, hospital, maternity care, dementia care, social services and schools. We offer flexible freelance work, remote/onsite mix, fair pay, professional development and a supportive bookings team.

Qualifications

Native or near-native Sylheti and English fluency is required.
A recognised interpreting or translation qualification or equivalent experience.
Experience in health or social care settings is welcome.
Current DBS check or willingness to obtain one for applicable assignments.
Right to work in the UK for on-site assignments.

Responsibilities

Interpret between English and Sylheti, using plain, familiar words with older clients.
Transcribe and translate recorded Sylheti speech into English, and translate written material into Bengali when qualified.
Interpret accurately and impartially, maintaining confidentiality.
Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, especially medical and legal bookings.
Work remotely by video or telephone, or on-site at the client's premises, arriving on time.
