Position Overview

JGM is seeking an experienced Fitter/Fabricator to join our team at our heavy industrial steel fabrication shop. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in the structural steel industry, preferably within an AISC-certified environment. This position requires the ability to efficiently and precisely fit and fabricate structural steel components to industry specifications. The role demands high technical skill, attention to detail, and a focus on safety and quality.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret and execute shop drawings and specifications for structural steel fabrication.
  • Perform precise layout and fitting of parts per drawings, specifications, and tolerances.
  • Verify layout accuracy for other fabricators and provide guidance as necessary.
  • Operate welding and fabrication equipment, including air carbon arc gouging, grinders, cutting torches, and welding tractors, with proficiency.
  • Pre-heat and prepare materials as required to meet welding and fabrication standards.
  • Utilize overhead cranes, forklifts, and other equipment to handle heavy materials safely and efficiently.
  • Inspect equipment regularly, maintain tools, and promptly communicate any repair or maintenance needs.
  • Work collaboratively within the team to meet production deadlines while ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Adhere to AISC, AWS D1.1, and internal safety standards and protocols throughout all tasks.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in fitting/fabricating structural steel in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Experience in an AISC-certified shop environment is highly preferred.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret shop drawings and specifications with minimal supervision.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work systematically and ensure accurate fitting on complex assemblies.
  • Demonstrated focus on safety, with an ability to anticipate and mitigate risks in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding work, including operating high-reach and scissor lifts when necessary.
  • High School Diploma or GED; additional certifications from a technical or trade school are a plus.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection and pass pulmonary function tests as required.
Physical Requirements
  • Regular use of hands and arms to manipulate steel parts, operate welding equipment, and fabricate components.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy materials, and perform tasks requiring precise hand-eye coordination.
  • Frequent climbing of ladders and stairs, and working from elevated platforms.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces, operate forklifts, cranes, and other heavy machinery, if properly trained and certified.
Work Environment
  • This is a shop-based position in a heavy industrial steel fabrication facility.
  • Tasks may involve exposure to harsh environments, including extreme temperatures, hazardous materials, fumes, and loud noise.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and respirators will be required at all times.
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols is essential, as the role involves working with dangerous machinery and materials.
  • Occasional work in confined spaces and at heights, following all relevant safety standards.
