Overview

Role: The Fisherman’s Lifeboat Museum in Sheringham is open from May – October between 12 – 4pm daily. As a volunteer you would become part of the weekly roster of volunteers. The volunteer’s role involves:

• Opening the Museum and Lifeboat Shed at noon and closing at 4pm
• Welcoming visitors and sharing knowledge about the Lifeboat and the Museum
• Turning lighting on/off
• Recording souvenir sales and taking money
• Recording the number of visitors to the museum

Induction and training: A full induction training will be given to volunteers to ensure they are confident and comfortable in their role.

Time commitment

2 hour sessions from 12 noon – 2pm or 2pm – 4pm depending on your availability. Fill-in sessions are often needed.

About the organisation

The Fishermen’s Lifeboat Museum is the home of the Henry Ramsey Upcher, Sheringham’s last private lifeboat, built in 1894 and in service until 1935. Still housed in the original boatshed from where she was launched. The museum is dedicated to the history of the lifeboats financed by the Upcher family of Sheringham Hall, to be manned by the fishermen of what was originally Lower Sheringham and includes a wealth of information on the earlier Augusta lifeboat 1838-1894 (famous for the Ispolen rescue). Exhibits tell stories of Sheringham’s fishing and boat building families of those times.
