Job summary

Assystem in Bristol seeks a Fire Engineer to join the Nuclear Safety & Environment team, supporting UK’s largest nuclear new build projects. You will contribute to fire safety design, perform risk assessments and regulatory compliance across Nuclear Island buildings.

You will collaborate with safety, systems, civil and layout teams to develop fire protection strategies and deliver technical reports within a highly regulated environment. Hybrid/onsite options available.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Fire Engineering or related discipline with exposure to regulated industries.
  • Experience in fire safety engineering and safety cases.
  • Knowledge of UK fire regulations including BS9999 and ETC-F preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct fire safety studies for Nuclear Island buildings.
  • Analyse combustibles and assess fire risks in plant areas.
  • Perform fire modelling using MAGIC to evaluate propagation risks.
  • Assess impact of fire on safety-critical systems and propose mitigations.
  • Develop fire protection strategies and support design reviews.
  • Prepare technical reports in line with quality standards.

Join a community committed to driving forward the future of energy.Job DescriptionWe are seeking a Fire Engineer to join a specialist Nuclear Safety & Environment team supporting two of the UK’s largest nuclear new build projects. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the fire safety design and assessment of nuclear facilities, ensuring compliance with nuclear safety requirements and UK fire regulations.Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will collaborate closely with safety, systems, civil, building design and plant layout teams to develop and maintain fire protection strategies across key nuclear facilities.Key ResponsibilitiesConduct fire safety studies and assessments for Nuclear Island buildings.Analyse combustible materials and evaluate fire risks within designated plant areas.Perform fire modelling and temperature evolution calculations using specialist software (e.g. MAGIC) to assess fire consequences and propagation risks.Evaluate the potential impact of fire on safety-critical systems and identify common cause failure risks.Provide technical fire engineering support to systems, layout and design teams.Support design modifications and assess their impact on existing fire studies and safety cases.Undertake regulatory assessments relating to fire and life safety requirements.Develop and recommend fire prevention and protection solutions.Prepare and deliver technical reports and documentation in line with project quality standards and programme requirements.Participate in technical committees, task forces and design reviews, representing the Fire Engineering and Nuclear Safety disciplines as required.My profileA degree in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or a related discipline.Experience in fire safety engineering, risk assessment or safety case development within a highly regulated industry.Knowledge of ETC-F (EPR Technical Code for Fire) would be appreciated.Experience and knowledge of UK Fire Regulations including BS9999.Ability to propose fire protection and detection solutions.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex technical issues.Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.Experience within the nuclear sector or other safety-critical industries would be advantageous.Additional informationJoin us at Assystem and be part of a global team delivering some of the most exciting and complex engineering projects in the world.
