Job summary

Fleetwood Town Football Club is seeking a commercially minded Financial Controller to lead the finance operation from Poolfoot Farm. You will deliver timely management information, protect cash flow and strengthen controls to support senior management decisions.

The role requires ACCA/CIMA, at least three years in football finance, and a proactive, leadership-focused approach to process improvement and compliance with HMRC, EFL and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Fleetwood Town Football Club is looking for an experienced, commercially minded Financial Controller to lead its day-to-day finance operation. This is a key role for a qualified finance professional who can combine technical strength with practical leadership. Delivering accurate reporting, protecting cash flow, strengthening controls and giving senior management the insight needed to make confident decisions.

The opportunity

At Fleetwood Town Football Club, finance sits at the centre of sound decision-making. As Financial Controller, you will oversee the company's accounting operations and lead the finance team, ensuring management information is timely, records are accurate and deadlines are met. You will work closely with senior management, translating financial data into meaningful insight while improving processes, managing risk and maintaining compliance with HMRC, the EFL and other relevant requirements.

This is a visible, hands-on position with real scope to shape the finance function and support the Club's wider ambitions.

What you'll lead

• Oversee the preparation of accurate monthly management information, supported by complete and reliable balance sheet reconciliations.
• Lead the annual financial statements process and work closely with the Club's auditors to meet all associated filing requirements.
• Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure external submissions are completed to deadline, including EFL SCMP and Regulation 16 reporting and VAT returns to HMRC.
• Support senior management with robust budgets and forecasts, providing clear and meaningful variance analysis.
• Produce practical cash-flow projections and actively manage the company's liquidity and cash resources.
• Maintain effective credit-control procedures and work with operational departments to optimise the collection of monies due.
• Oversee banking connections and the efficient settlement of approved liabilities.
• Develop and maintain robust financial controls, including appropriate segregation of duties and authorisation processes.
• Monitor compliance with relevant accounting standards, tax obligations, financial regulations and football-authority requirements.
• Lead, supervise and develop the finance team, setting clear responsibilities, objectives and performance expectations.
• Review the accuracy and quality of the team's work, ensuring effective coverage across all finance responsibilities.
• Oversee the accurate processing of payroll data and the relationship with the Club's external payroll provider.
• Provide useful payroll management information, including analysis of departmental costs.
• Identify opportunities to improve finance systems, processes and reporting across the business.

What you'll bring

• A recognised accounting qualification, preferably ACCA or CIMA.
• At least three years' experience managing a finance team within a football club.
• Strong knowledge of applicable accounting standards, financial controls and risk management.
• Demonstrable experience of liquidity management, management reporting, budgeting, forecasting and audit.
• Experience of meeting demanding external reporting requirements accurately and on time.
• Strong financial accounting, analytical and reporting skills, with excellent attention to detail.
• Confident leadership and team-management capability.
• A practical, solutions-focused approach to problem-solving and process improvement.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to explain financial information clearly.
• The organisation and resilience to manage competing priorities and fixed deadlines.
• High standards of confidentiality and care when handling sensitive business and payroll data.
