As Finance Manager, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining a robust financial control framework, ensuring accurate financial data, mentoring a team of Accounts Assistants, and driving continuous improvement across finance processes. You'll be responsible for key areas such as month‑end processes, fixed asset management, internal recharges, credit card reconciliations, and supporting the annual audit.
Key Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the charity to drive financial accountability, enhance financial understanding and improve communication.
- Team‑manage a team of Accounts Assistants by ensuring their professional growth, setting objectives, conducting appraisals and coaching where required.
- Deputise for the Financial Controller.
- Maintain the integrity and accuracy of data by ensuring income and expenditure are correctly assigned and in a timely manner (for example, restricted vs unrestricted, charged to the appropriate department or prompt correction).
- Play a key role in the month‑end process by taking responsibility for key processes such as:
- Timely allocation and reconciliation of the diocese's main bank account;
- Timely review and approval of journals of the team including recharges, petty cash, intercompany, accruals, deferrals, prepayments and other relevant accounts;
- Timely preparation of journals where required;
- Ensure ledgers and balance sheet reconciliations are up to date and signed off;
- Ensure overall month‑end process and timeline are adhered to.
- Fully own the fixed assets maintenance process by ensuring accurate posting of additions/disposals and depreciation, and maintain regular communication with budget holders on project statuses.
- Fully own the internal recharges process for credit card expenses, IT expenses, DBS checks, health and safety and other diocesan activities.
- Fully own the credit card reconciliation process by being the point of contact, ensuring timely submissions are received and postings into the GL, and ensuring adherence to policy by credit card holders.
- Review and approve payments including weekly BACS payment run and HSBCnet payments.
- Support the annual statutory audit process with the preparation of working papers and reconciliations, and liaise with the auditors.
- Contribute to continuous improvements in finance processes and systems, implementing best practices and maintaining financial controls to mitigate financial risk.
- Perform any other accounting and finance related ad‑hoc tasks as and when required, including holiday cover and contributing to projects.
Qualifications
- Finalist or qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA) or qualified by experience.
- Strong financial accounting knowledge and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency in Excel and Word; knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains is desirable.
Experience working in a faith‑based or charitable setting is welcome but not essential.
