Job description

Finance Director Certsure, home of NICEIC

Lead the financial decisions that help NICEIC uphold safety and standards across the electrical industry.

  • Location: Hybrid with 3 days minimum in Dunstable, Bedfordshire (including occasion travel to Chesterfield office and client meetings)
About the role

As Finance Director, you will join the NICEIC Leadership Team and serve as an executive member with voting rights on the Certsure Management Board. With our three-year strategy and Target Operating Model taking shape, you will ensure financial insight informs choices about growth, investment, cost, risk and customer value, while safeguarding long-term sustainability.

Working with CEO Clair Mowbray and senior colleagues, particularly the Customer, Growth and Market Leadership Director, you will connect revenue plans and pipeline assumptions with pricing, margins, proposition investment and cost-to-serve. Your modelling, scenario planning and constructive challenge will help us weigh options and make evidence-led decisions.

You will lead finance and procurement, combining strong financial stewardship and governance with a modern, forward-looking service. You will strengthen business partnering, improve systems and reporting, and build financial confidence across the organisation so leaders can take ownership of performance, resources and value.

What we are looking for

You will be a qualified accountant with significant senior finance leadership experience in a complex, customer-facing, commercial or regulated organisation. You will bring a record of strategic financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, investment appraisal and business performance management.

You will understand how revenue, pipeline, pricing, margin and customer value connect to financial sustainability, and have experience of financial control, statutory reporting, audit, risk, procurement and supplier management. You will also have modernised finance systems, reporting or business partnering, and helped non-finance colleagues use financial insight with confidence.

You will be a clear communicator and trusted partner, comfortable offering evidence-based challenge and balancing ambition with affordability. Curious about customers, markets and the drivers of organisational value, you will work across boundaries, make sound judgements and embody NICEIC’s values of Curiosity, Courage and Commitment.

If you are a qualified finance leader ready to help shape Certsure’s next stage, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Welcome from the Chief Executive Officer

Thank you for your interest in joining Certsure as Finance Director.

I joined Certsure earlier this year because I saw both the importance of what we do and the opportunity ahead. Through NICEIC, we have spent 70 years helping to raise standards across the electrical industry, and more than 40,000 businesses now carry our certification. Our work supports technical competence, safety and trust.

We are developing our three-year strategy and Target Operating Model. We have a strong organisation and respected brand to build from, with choices to make about growth, investment and how we can strengthen value for customers and the wider industry. Clear, well-judged financial insight will be essential to those decisions.

As Finance Director, you will be a key member of the NICEIC Leadership Team and an executive member with voting rights on the Certsure Management Board. You will help us make evidence-led choices about growth, investment, cost, risk and long-term financial sustainability.

Working with me and the senior leadership team, you will connect revenue forecasts and pipeline assumptions with pricing, margins, propositions and cost-to-serve. You will bring clarity to the financial trade-offs behind our plans and help the team understand the value and affordability of its choices.

You will also lead finance and procurement, maintaining robust control, reporting and governance while developing a more forward-looking, business-partnering capability. There is scope to modernise systems, processes and reporting, strengthen financial insight and help leaders across Certsure feel confident taking ownership of performance and resources.

We are looking for a qualified accountant with significant senior finance experience in a complex, customer-facing, commercial or regulated organisation. You will bring strong financial planning, forecasting, modelling and investment appraisal skills, alongside experience in commercial performance, financial control, audit and procurement. We are interested in someone who can see the connections between customer, operational and financial performance and turn that insight into useful advice.

How you lead will matter. You will build trusted relationships, communicate complex matters clearly and offer constructive, evidence-based challenge. I want finance to enable confident decisions across Certsure, creating space for curiosity, courageous thinking and shared accountability. Our values of Curiosity, Courage and Commitment should be visible in how we work every day.

If you are interested in shaping the financial direction of a respected organisation and supporting its next stage of development, I hope you will consider joining us.

I look forward to hearing from you.

About Certsure, home of NICEIC

NICEIC is Certsure’s flagship brand and the UK’s largest certification body for electrical businesses. For 70 years, NICEIC has played an important role in raising standards across the electrical industry, and today more than 40,000 businesses carry NICEIC certification.

Our work is grounded in technical competence, safety and trust. We assess and certify businesses against recognised standards, while supporting customers through training, technical expertise, guidance, publications and services that help them develop their businesses and deliver high-quality work.

Certsure is an LLP owned by two partners, Electrical Safety First and the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA). This gives us a distinctive position within the sector. Our commercial success supports our partners’ wider work to improve electrical safety and support the electrical contracting industry, connecting the strength of our business with a broader contribution to the sector. Find out more about Certsure.

Building the future of NICEIC

The electrical industry is developing rapidly. Electrification, renewable technologies and the transition to low-carbon energy are creating new opportunities for businesses and changing the skills and services their customers need.

For NICEIC, this brings questions about how we continue to support existing customers, attract new ones and develop products and services that respond to where the industry is heading. Our reputation and market position give us a strong foundation from which to do that.

We are developing a new three-year strategy and reshaping our Target Operating Model to support the next stage of Certsure’s development. A stronger understanding of our customers and markets will be central to this, alongside better use of data and greater commercial capability.

We want customer insight to inform the decisions we make about propositions, pricing and investment, while continuing to protect the technical integrity on which NICEIC’s reputation has been built. The Customer and Commercial Director will have an important role in connecting these areas and helping us develop a more joined-up approach across the organisation.

Our people and culture

How we achieve our ambitions matters. We want Certsure to be a place where people share their expertise, work across organisational boundaries and feel able to question established ways of doing things.

Our leadership approach places importance on creating a safe space for curiosity, shared learning and constructive challenge. We want colleagues to feel trusted to contribute, take ownership and use evidence to make good decisions.

As we develop Certsure, we are investing in the capability of our people as well as our products, services and systems. For our senior leaders, that means contributing beyond their own area of responsibility and helping colleagues across the organisation succeed.

We have been awarded a 1-star accreditation from Best Companies, which is a significant achievement that shows we take workplace engagement seriously. We believe that a supportive environment is essential for our team members to thrive. To achieve this, we have implemented various initiatives, including Certsure Well-being Week, which focuses on mental, physical, nutritional and financial well-being.

At Certsure we are committed to inclusion and psychological safety, reinforcing our aim to create a working environment where colleagues feel safe to disclose their needs and confident that they will be listened to, supported, and treated fairly.

Applicants can request adjustments at any stage of recruitment via the recruitment contact or hiring manager. We will agree and arrange suitable support promptly (e.g., alternative formats, accessible interview arrangements, extra time), sharing information only on a need-to-know basis.

If the applicant is successful, any ongoing workplace adjustments are reviewed during onboarding and then on an ongoing basis. Further guidance can be found in the Certsure Guidance on Reasonable Adjustments for Disability, Health Conditions and Neurodiversity document.

We understand that different members of the community have different access needs and have made some modifications to the way we do business to accommodate people from diverse communities and abilities. We offer the following amenities:

  • Step free access to the building, all key meeting rooms and bathrooms, and an accessible workstation
  • Accessibility dogs are welcome
  • Interviews can be held in meeting rooms that support hearing loops
  • Papers and materials can be presented in different formats
  • A sign language interpreter can be accessed for interview
  • Working patterns and locations can be adjusted

Recruitment selection processes are based on evidence of competence stated in the person specification and in relation to our values.
