You will ensure service stability, security and proper retirement of legacy storage during a controlled transition.
The role requires strong experience with NAS and Windows file services, AD permissions, and storage migrations, plus scripting for automation and robust documentation.
We are looking for an experienced File Storage Specialist to join our Technology team on an 18-month fixed-term contract basis in London.
The Technology team provides expertise and effective solutions to Penguin Random House. We integrate flexibility and agility which supports our consistent way of working. As File Storage Specialist, you’ll lead the technical migration of our enterprise file storage from existing on-premises infrastructure to cloud-based solutions, including our shared-drive migration to Box.
Working across Technology and with application owners and suppliers, you’ll ensure that existing services remain stable and secure throughout the transition, and that legacy infrastructure is only retired once replacement services, data and dependencies have been fully tested and accepted.
Building a detailed understanding of the existing storage estate, including data, permissions, ownership and technical dependencies.
Maintaining secure, stable and recoverable file services while investigating and resolving performance, access and connectivity issues.
Leading storage migrations from discovery and planning through to data transfer, validation, testing and cutover.
Managing permissions and access, including filesystem permissions, Active Directory groups and service accounts, working closely with data owners and Information Security.
Planning and safely delivering the transition and decommissioning of legacy storage, including appropriate rollback, recovery and sign-off.
Maintaining clear technical documentation and runbooks, and transferring knowledge to the teams supporting the new environment.
Strong hands-on experience with enterprise NAS and Windows file services, including SMB/NTFS, filesystem and share permissions, Active Directory groups and service accounts.
Experience of troubleshooting storage performance, capacity and access issues within an enterprise environment.
Experience of delivering storage migrations from discovery through to migration, testing, cutover and safe retirement of legacy services.
Experience of validating data integrity, metadata and permissions as part of a migration.
A good understanding of file and object storage and cloud or hybrid connectivity.
The ability to investigate technical dependencies across applications, file paths, integrations, networks and identity.
Experience of using PowerShell or equivalent scripting for inventory, automation and validation.
Experience of working within change, incident and problem management processes.
Strong documentation skills, with experience creating clear technical documentation and runbooks.
The ability to work collaboratively and communicate technical information clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
A methodical approach to problem-solving, with the ability to take ownership, identify risks and follow issues through to resolution.
Please note: You must have eligibility to work in the UK to be considered for this opportunity.
Experience with Biblio or other Digital Asset Management (DAM) platforms.
Experience with enterprise file-storage products or supplier-led cloud migrations.
Familiarity with storage costs and licensing, backup and archiving approaches, and secure infrastructure disposal.
